Findlay, Professor George; preface by Professor Raymond Dart Dr Robert Broom. Palaeontologist & Physician 1866-1951 . . . 255 x 180 ` . . . Biography. Appreciation. Bibliography. The Taungs Skull. Sterkfontein. Kromdraai. Contributions to the Study of Man` This, the authoritative biography of the person acknowledged as one of South Africa`s three great palaeontologists (with Dart and Philip Tobias), was partly based on material for an autobiography passed to one of Broom`s sons, who subsequently declined the opportunity in favour of Finlay, the present author. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Broom`s 85-year life is that he was a medical practitioner for forty years between his early achievements at Victoria College, Stellenbosch, in the field of marsupial palaeontology and the last 17 years of his life, when as an elderly staff member of the Transvaal Museum he carried out the major work of his life in the field of man`s predecessors, including the australopithecines. Until he joined forces with J T Robinson, the co-author of many of his later publications, he preferred to work on his own. These publications - no fewer than 456 in number - remarkably included several on postage stamps and one recording an aloe named after him. Quarter-bound in brown simulated leather and tan cloth, gilt to the upper panel and the spine, this book, despite making use of typewriter-generated camera-ready copy, epitomises Balkema`s high production standards, including a superbly informative typographical tan cartridge dustjacket and excellent paper stocks for the xviii + 157 pp of text, chronology, bibliography and index and the 32 pp of inserted plates. Unmarked and undiscoloured, this is a superb copy in every respect. ÿ Fine Cape Town Balkema 1972 Click here to view further details and images and to bid

Abbe Henri Breuil with the collabotaion of Mary E. Boyle and Dr. E. R. Scherz. The Rock Paintings of Southern Africa: Volume Two. PHILIPP CAVE 28 X 38cm Philipp Cave is the second volume of a series recording this remarkable work of the Abbe Breuil, during the 1940`s, who undertook to survey and study , and to trace these remarkable findings. It reveals an interesting and hitherto little known frieze in the Erongo region of South West Africa(Namibia). In addition to some unusual, early drawings of animals in white, the frieze includes a `Tall Man` whose stylised figure and Nilotic head caused him to be nicknamed the `Pharoah` by the Abbe and his companions. In the Abbe`s view, this and other figures in Philipp Cave have a definite affinity with the paintings of the White Lady shelter in the Brandberg, some ninety miles to the north-west, which were the subject of the first volume. The Abbe`s original copies reproduced in 31 plates by colour collotype and hand-stencil; 30 photographs, reproduced by collotype, document his copies. In all there are 19 pages of reproductins, inclusing one double page. This being one of 1200 unnumbered copies published 1957. Original pale blue cloth with clipped dustcover. Patrica Vinnicombe PEOPLE OF THE ELAND- Rock Paintings of the Drakensberg Bushmen as a reflection of their life and thought.(First Edition) 27 X 22.5cm This book, illustrated by over 200 of Miss Vinnicombe`s tracings and the photographs, is the definitive record of the Bushman culture in the Drakensberg and its environs. It also covers the period of contact between the Bushmen and the successive waves of immigrants, both Black and White, who, from time to time, moved into their homeland. Unlike other books, however, this one gives the story from, as it were, the viewpoint of the Bushman. The author, by a careful study of the official records of reprisal expeditions against the Bushmen, was able to establish the probable escape routes they used. Then,in the field, she explored these routes in great detail. In several cases she found rock paintings showing parties of mounted Europeans which in number and apparel, agree with official records of the bumber of farmers and of troopers who took part in the espeditions. These paintings thus appear to be true eyewitness accounts. In the second and larger part of the book she discusses what is recorded in the literature about the Bushmen of the Drakensberg, tells what is known of their beliefs and attitudes to life and relates these to the content of the paintings developing in the process an interesting theory of associations and avoidances supported by a statistical analysis of the subject matter of the paintings. Hardcover with dustcover over original dark brown rexine boards with gilt blocking to frontcover and lettering to spine. Maps to endpapers. Meintjes, Johannes The Sword in the Sand 14x25cm Hardcover Octavo (143x220mm) bound in the original dark grey cloth on boards with white title to spine, in Good condition; pictorial dust wrapper with some insect damage; 14 preliminary and 242 pages of text, including index; photographic frontispiece and 16 pages of black and white plates; Title page signed by the Author. Meintjes recounts the events surrounding the life, Boer War exploits and death of an Afrikaans folk hero. Gideon Jacobus Scheepers was born in Middelburg, Transvaal (then known as the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek [ZAR] or South African Republic). He joined the ZAR State Artillery as a heliograph operator at the age of 16. In 1898 he transferred to the Orange Free State Artillery Corps, to assist in establishing a signals section in that unit. During the Anglo-Boer War he initially served as a signaller in Natal. Later he took part in the Battle of Magersfontein. Thereafter he entered the Cape Colony as part of a Commando and was soon promoted to Commandant of his own Commando of 150 men. His orders were to disrupt British communications by destroying railways and telegraph lines. His successes caused a number of Cape Rebels to join his Commando. By the 10th October 1901 Scheepers was seriously ill, probably from appendicitis, and had to be abandoned at Kopjeskraal, a farm in the vicinity of Prince Albert. A part of Scheepers‹¨« Diary, written in a small notebook has survived, and covers the period from his surrender to his execution. Having surrendered to the British on the 11th October he was given medical treatment and later transferred to Graaff-Reinet. Although Scheepers was an officer of the OFS Artillery Corps, and therefore a prisoner of war, he was put on trial before a military tribunal on charges of murder, arson and damage to the railways. The court appears to have been totally biased and found him guilty on very slender evidence. He was sentenced to death and executed on the 18th January 1902. The manner of his execution led to international criticism. Good Cape Town Tafelberg-Uitgewers 1969 Click here to view further details and images and to bid

Meyer, Dr. Hans Across East African Glaciers: an Account of the First Ascent of Kilimanjaro 18x25cm A Hardcover Quarto (180x248mm) book in a rather battered library binding, but with the contents in exceptionally good condition; 20 preliminary pages plus 404 pages of text including detailed appendices on the geology, geography, selected flora and insects of the region, and an index; chromolithographed frontispiece, 8 tipped in photographs, 12 photogravure plates and 19 line drawings in the text; 3 coloured fold-out maps. The frontispiece and eight photographs were printed in Germany. There are small library stamps on the front inner end-paper, the back of the frontispiece and the first page of the preface. Regarded by many as the most important book on mountaineering in Africa. Translated from the German by E.H.S. Calder, the book documents the first undisputed ascent of Kibo Peak, the highest point in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro has three peaks, Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo, the latter being the highest. Dr. Meyer was a geologist and experienced climber who made several trips to the Kilimanjaro region between 1887 and 1889, culminating in his successful ascent to the Kibo peak. In 1887, during his first attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, Meyer reached the base of Kibo, but had to turn back, as he did not have the equipment necessary to handle the deep snow and ice of the peak. The following year, Meyer planned another attempt with the cartographer Oscar Baumann, but the mission was aborted due to an Arab revolt. In 1889, however, Meyer returned to Kilimanjaro with the celebrated Austrian mountaineer, Ludwig Purtscheller, for another attempt. Their climbing team included two local headmen, nine porters, a cook, and a guide. Meyer and Purtscheller finally reached the summit on the southern rim of the crater on Purtscheller`s 40th birthday, October 6, 1889. Meyer named this summit `Kaiser Wilhelm Spitze` (now known as Uhuru Point). In Meyer`s honour, the highest summit of Mawenzi is still known as Hans Meyer Peak. The summit of Kibo wouldn`t be climbed again until 20 years later. Meyer`s eventual success has been attributed to his recognition that the greatest obstacle to achieving the summit was the lack of food in the upper regions. In his final climb he established several camps on the mountain, and was able to make a number of attempts at reaching the summit without descending to the base. This is a lively and highly readable account of the expedition. Good London George Philip and Son 1891 Click here to view further details and images and to bid
