The first sale of the contents totalled £75,562 4s 6d. It included the famous "Chandos Portrait" of Shakespeare which sold to the Earl of Ellesmere for £372 15s. and in 1856 became the first donation to the newly-created National Portrait Gallery. "A tragic sale this...It lasted thirty-five days and the prices were incredibly low. This was probably because such a vast accumulation of treasure by many generations of a single family was just more than the trade, collectors and local gentry between them could absorb at one go." An Aynsley butterfly wing part tea set including a teapot, cups and saucers, three Shelley trios etc CONDITION REPORT: The Aynsley teapot 19cm wide x 12cm high and matching basin are in overall good condition, the pink teacup saucer and plate have minor surface scratches otherwise ok, the pink jug is overall ok, the purple teacup - handle decoration is worn, the saucers are ok. Four Coalport South African War commemorative plates, transfer printed with Field Marshal Lord Roberts centrally placed within Victoria Cross, South African area names and anchors on chains surrounding, the names of his principal commanding officers woven on on to scrolled band as a border, semi-gadrooned rim with gold line decoration to edge, Coalport stamp in green to back along with text relevant to the commemorative event and individually numbered; two plates are blue and white transfer printed, one diameter 26 cms, numbered 794, cracked, the other diameter 26.5 cms approx, numbered 48, good condition, slight rub of gilt on edge rim; one with gilded central area circling Lord Roberts, diameter 26.5 cms, numbered 1176, some light scratches to central gilding; along with a luxury version with entire central background in gilt, diameter 27 cms, numbered 753, some light scratches to gilding, some gilt wear to edges [4]

Date; Two blue mark, 1782-1800, one red mark c.1800-1825 Size varying from 22cm. to 26 cm. diameter. Condition; Near Matlock (green) 7cm. hairline crack from rim, wear to gilding, stains and pitting. 'Near Lancaster Sands' old repair to rim chip, three chips to foot rim, very worn gilding and scratched, yellow faded. Untitled 'Apricot Border' two chips to underside of rim, foot rim scuffed. Gilding and enamels well worn.
A 19th century Derby red mark part dinner service, decorated with blue ground gilt panels between plain scroll and Billingsley style flowers, comprising 6 soup bowls, 25 cms diameter, 24 dinner plates 25.5 cms diameter, 2 serving dishes (covers missing), 2 sauce three s with covers and stands, 5 graduated serving plates the largest being 45 cms long and the smallest 28 cms long, large tureen and cover. Some damage, some stapled restoration.
Two delftware plates; a London polychrome ‘seated Chinaman’ pattern, diameter 22 cms, and a Bristol or London smaller blue and white plate depicting birds on a pond surrounded by tress and flowers, diameter 17 cms, Condition: polychrome plate has been broken in half and repaired, edges with three more prominent ones, Blue and white plate; broken in half and repaired, large double chip to edge and other chips around.
A pair of pearlware blue and white plates, late 18th Century, possibly Liverpool, blue feathered serpentine edge, in ‘Long Eliza’ pattern, relief double swags to border, diameter 24 cms, one with nibbles to points on feather edging and some scratches to centre, the other with three hairline cracks; the largest running 9cms, 3 chips and some nibbles to edges, staining and scratches to centre.
Two creamware blue and white plates, feather edged border, decorated with floral sprigs and swags, smallest plate diameter 23 cms, largest 25 cms, Condition: smaller plate; restored chip to feather edge, smaller chips to edge, 11 small chips to foot rim, Larger plate; 6 restored chips to edge, other chips to edge, fine crazing to both.
A famille rose saucer with border of flowers and butterflies, central scene with four figures, diameter 14 cms, a loved Imari palette bowl with blue and white psuedo armourial to inside centre, Height 7 cms, diameter 13 cms, three blue and white plates with scene of building, boat, birds and trees, surrounded by a border of three floral sprigs, diameter 23 cms, and a transfer printed and over painted vase, handles broken off and chipped to rim, height 19 cms [6]
Nanking cargo: a pair of plates with central floral decoration, fence and flower border and floral sprigs, Christie’s label for Lot 3633, Diameter 23.5 cms, along with a smaller dish with scene of two story building with trees, discolouration to gilt detailing, Christie’s label for lot 5194. Condition : glaze chips to edges, one with are of crazing to centre, the other with firing imperfections, smaller dish; 1 cm hairline crack emanating from chip to rim, gilt discoloured and missing in places but original location can be seen under light.
