Tooke, 1677.⁂ Edward Browne (1644-1708) was the son of Sir Thomas Browne, author of Religio Medici, and was also a physician but travelled extensively throughout Europe. The plates include the whirlpool in the Danube, the Bear garden in Dresden, and the quicksilver miners of Idria. Sidney Mendelssohn, book-collector and author of books on South Africa, particularly South African Bibliography published in 1910.

Lithgow, a Scot, travelled extensively throughout the Levant, Greece, Constantinople and the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, Italy and Spain "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed and is probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, the pigeon-post between Aleppo and Bagdad etc. etc." - Blackmer.

Music.- Babell (William) Suits of the most Celebrated Lessons Collected and Fitted to the Harpsicord or Spinnet..., first edition, engraved title, engraved 'Table of the Lessons', 76 engraved plates of music (numbered 2-77), manuscript ink annotation to front endpaper verso, title with light uniform browning and offsetting, plate 65 with small marginal tear to lower edge (just touching but not affecting music), some light browning and spotting, endpapers renewed, modern half calf, upper joint splitting at head and foot, rubbed, folio, Walsh and Hare, [1717].⁂ Rare. RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales) lists no copy at the BL, nor is it listed on ESTC. Meanwhile, RBH lists only 4 copies at auction in the last 40 years. This collection, which includes some of Babell's own material, also contains some of the earliest known published arrangements and harpsicord transcriptions of arias by G. F. Handel, for example from his operas Rinaldo (1711) and Teseo (1713). Although Babell (1960-1723) was trained predominantly by his bassoonist father, it is thought to be possible that Handel also contributed to his musical training.

Erotica.- The Beggar's Benison.- Ovid. Ovid's art of love, in three books, engraved frontispiece and 7 plates, 5pp. advertisements at end, with the phallic red wax seal of the Beggar's Benison to front pastedown, occasional spotting, contemporary calf, spine in compartments and with remains of red morocco label, spine ends and corners worn, rubbed, 12mo, Printed for J. Tonson, 1719.⁂ Established in 1739 The Most Ancient and Most Puissant Order of the Beggar's Benison and Merryland, Anstruther was a Scottish gentleman's club devoted to carnal matters. The well-healed members had a stock of pornography and naked 'posture girls' at their disposal. Activities included comparing phalluses and collective masturbation into a 'Test Platter', now held by St. Andrew's University. Artefacts relating to the club are rarely seen at auction.

The second volume (and its appendix volume) describes the narrative of the Beagle's second voyage under Capt. Fitzroy made between 1831 and 1836 to South America, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, and other islands and countries. "The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin's intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal scientific training. He returned a hard-headed man of science, knowing the importance of evidence, almost convinced that species had not always been as they were since the creation but had undergone change... Cole, 1830 and Broadside.- Nature and Art. The Rev. J.L. A set in the 10 original parts is extremely rare.

His account of his discoveries (see previous lot) generated great excitement in England and on behalf of the British Museum, a firman was requested from the sultan to export some of the Lycian treasures to England. As a result seventy-eight packing cases of sculptures were exported to the British Museum in 1842.Baron Behr was an important collector of coins who donated part of his collection to the British Museum.

(1851-1925), scientific author, barrister and pioneer of road transport. His home at Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells is now the Salomons Museum and a centre for technology. Salomons was fascinated by electricity and Broomhill was one of the first homes to be fitted with electric light, as well as an early electric cooker, butter churn and alarms, all made by him and his staff in his workshops. He was also an horologist and assembled the largest private collection of watches and clocks by Abraham-Louis Breguet.

Whittington Press.- Matrix: A Review for Printers & Bibliophiles, vol.1-36 [a complete set], all number II of deluxe specially-bound edition (with limitations ranging from XXX to CX copies), most containing additional material, all with specimens, plates and illustrations, many coloured, tipped in or folding, original morocco- or vellum-backed marbled boards, uncut, vol.7 onwards with additional material loose as issued in original portfolios including prints and broadsides, some signed, together in slip-cases, Andoversford or Risbury, Whittington Press, 1981-2020; and the reprint of vol.2 and Index to vol.1-21 (both numbered II), large 8vo (38)⁂ A superb set of this outstanding periodical of modern presswork and the only consecutively-numbered complete set in existence. The set numbered I was reserved for the printer/publisher John Randle of the Whittington Press but was dispersed some years ago. This set belonged to the proprietor of the Senecio Press, Adrian Lack, who printed many of the illustrations for the work.
