(JUDAICA) 'RED AND GLOWING IS THE EYE OF THE JEW' Scarce German book: 'Rot und gluhend ist das Auge des Juden' ('Red and glowing is the eye of the Jew'), by Arno Nadel (1878-1943), German Jewish poet and musicologist, and Jakob Steinhardt (1887-1968), Israeli artist and engraver of Polish and Jewish extraction. (Berlin: Verlag für Judische Kunst und Kultur Fritz Gurlitt), 1920. 25pp. 9 1/2 x 11 3/4 in., with eight tipped-in plates and a facsimile of a music score. Striking woodcut on front cover showing an elderly Jewish man with a boy before a table with two candles. An attractive work, delicately and sensitively illustrated with images of Jews at prayer. Some soiling and wear to margins on cover, else very good. Especially poignant in that in November 1938, Arno Nadel was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Although he was lucky enough to get papers to leave for England, he was too frail to make the trip. In March 1943, he and his wife were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp. He died there the same year.

The interior features a segmented brown leather sweatband with draw string split to allow access to the mounting screws, with no other marks present. Gold band of the cockade is completely faded. Leather chinstrap moderately worn and cracked in a few spots. A few scratches to the exterior of the helmet. Accompanied by the original coned-shaped black leather case from maker Friedrich Brandt of Berlin, roughly 15.5 x 5.5 x 13 in, with leather strap and remnants of the paper tag present. Dents and scratches to the case.
EMILE ZOLA '32 CARICATURES DE LEBOURGEOIS' Rare set 32 plates caricaturing EMILE ZOLA (1840-1902), French novelist, journalist, playwright, and best-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism. Bernard et Cie.), 1898, contained in a gilt-embossed brown faux leather folder. The corner is bumped a bit. The scenes place Zola in the predicaments explored in his writings, such as the novels Germinal and Nana, or involved in the causes about which he was passionate, such as the unjust court martial for treason of Jewish military officer, Alfred Dreyfus. A few of the images bear anti-Semitic caricatures as well. Fine condition.
