A 19th Century French Rosewood Ebonised Marquetry and Gilt Metal Mounted Rectangular Card Table, with rounded front corners, the whole inlaid with stringings, urns, mythical beasts and leaf scrolls, with baize lined folding top, on turned fluted and tapering supports, and X-pattern stretcher, 24.5ins wide x 16.5ins deep x 31ins highThe leather inset to the top is heavily distressed, scratched and stained. There are some rips and three large areas of loss each around 4ins diameter. The wooden components to the top have light scattered scratching and darker staining. Around all three front edges of the top and the upper tier have general rubbing and edge knocks. The drawers run free and easily with minimal resistance. General heavier wear to the feet and legs commensurate with age. Overall the item is structurally sound however there is some movement in the joints.

An 18th Century Dutch marquetry inlaid fold over card table, the top detailed with an urn of flowers and birds opening to reveal a blue baize lined interior, each corner detailed with a coloured playing card, above a concave single drawer front, on carved cabriole legs to the front and back terminating in claw and ball feet, height 71cm x depth 34cm x length 74cm. A George II style mahogany folding card table, width 75cm, depth 38cm, height 76cm. Condition - fair to good Provenance: Constables Tower, the main entrance gate to Dover Castle, was constructed in 1220 and was traditionally for the use of the Constable of Dover Castle. From the mid-eighteenth century to 2015 it was the home of the Deputy Constable of the Castle, and their families. Serving as a private residence, office, and reception space for formal events and ceremonies, over the years visitors have included leading figures from Admirals to Bishops and even Royalty.The building and its contents were transferred to English Heritage in 2015 and an assessment of the historical significance of the building and its contents have taken place. The furniture being offered for sale was all in use in the building, offering a tangible connection to the history of the place. However, it is not sufficiently historically important to be brought into the museum collection for Dover Castle. The proceeds from the sale of this furniture, will enable English Heritage – itself a charity – to fund the conservation and care of the objects from Constables Tower which are particularly historically significant.
