Lot 159

A lady at her toilet by moonlight,  Provincial Mughal, India, circa 1790Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the lady depicted standing on a silver low table half-dressed and wearing pearl and gem-set jewellery, she reaches behind her to dress her hair, her white scarf flowing behind her, a white crane and various vessels at her feet, two pink blossoming trees to the background,  mounted on a gold flecked album page, borders trimmed, 15 x 10cm. Condition Report: The edges and corners of this cropped card are in very good condition. Under U. V this painting reveals extensive areas of a green-yellow hues around the standing figure. They cover the floral bushes and most of the painting's upper left corner area, under the figure, the lower right corner area (where the crane stands). Visible to the naked eye is a triangular area of a darker hue rising from the painting's left edge. The white pigments of the lady's dress are dulled and perhaps, starting to lift off. A small drop stain can be seen in the middle of the garment and two more circular brownish minute stains can be spotted on her scarf and pleated dress. The dark field shows some minute losses and creases overall. This painting would benefit form further attention. The department would recommend an inspection in person before bidding.
