Some old splits and chips. Old veneer repairs to the frieze with filler used in places. One of the counter wells to the interior with old filled/plugged hole, another counter well with vacant old screw hole to centre. Baize inset surface is later. Later supporting blocks and glue residue to the underside of the table. Some evidence of old worm to underside. Three of the feet with chips/losses. Both rear feet with elements of the edge broken of and re-glued.Glue residue visible between one rear leg and hinged section of the frieze. Condition Report: Please note: Following further inspection it has been concluded that this table should be described as follows and not as described in the printed catalogue:A walnut demi-lune folding card table or credence table, circa 1690 and laterCondition as follows:Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old chips and splits. Some old repairs, including various sections of veneer to the rear frieze and some other areas. Evidence of old worm with old filler/dark wax used to disguise in areas. Fabric to interior of top is later. It has some wear and fraying to edges. Some sections of replacement veneer - see images. Parts of the table would appear to incorporate later or adapted elements including the gateleg elements of the rear legs and the hinged actions they revolve on, possibly the legs and feet themselves and the undertier. All appear to incorporate old timber. The legs are faded in colour and quite highly polished. Section of moulding to the rear frieze which houses one of the legs is detached but present. See additional images showing some additional dark coloured old scratches and indentation. Some fading overall. Old fragmentary loss to baize insets caused by old moth damage. Some wear scratching and minor loss to the slender ebonised moulded elements running across the top of each frieze. Part of the rear frieze of one table has old worm holes. The worm is no longer live. There are no obvious significant signs of worm damage elsewhere to the tables. Generally in good original condition overall. An Edwardian satinwood banded mahogany games/drinks table, with twin flap swivelling top concealing compartment containing three slice and hobnail cut glass decanters and eight slice cut and etched glasses, frieze drawer fitted with compartment for card games, chess and dominoes, chess board slide and cribbage board slide, on squared tapered legs, fitted ceramic castors, width 76cm, depth 46cm, height 74cmCONDITION: Overall of even reddish brown mahogany tone, some light surface scuffing and wear to the top, baize watermarked with some holes, top swivels to reveal a compartment containing three decanters, the other side has a hinged door and holds eight well matched but associated glasses, and a recess for an ice bucket which is missing as is the key to the lock, frieze drawer has key but does not appear to work the lock, top of drawer is stamped with a registration number 514989, has one lidded compartment with chess pieces, bone and ebony dominoes and sundry card games, cribbage board slides out completely as does the chess board which is backed with baize, both in good order, legs with a fair amount of scuffing and front left leg has been broken and repaired, castors worn from use.

Stephen Lewin (fl.1890-1910) The reflective card player - gentleman seated at a table after a nights unsuccessful gaming and gambling Signed and dated (18)85, oil on canvas, 106cm by 79cm Provenance: Christie's, The Cowdray Sale, 14th September 2011 With Christie's stencil FP355 to reverse See illustration . in fully restored condition, slightly stiff reline, cleaned and revarnished. some surface dirt and discouled varnish now in evidence. varnish showing as opaque in craqelure. some general strenghening and retouching to background in addition to repainting and picking out of features of portrait hanging on wall. in addition to approx 50% of left hand side of the tapestry. some of the darker shadows within the carving of the chair the gentleman is seated in has been retouched, as has more of the detailing on the bowl and other ornaments which adorn the table on the left hand side of the picture. similar level of treatment can be found on the gentlemans legs in addition to the lower decoration of the chair, shadow, superficial scratch to gentlemans left arm and elbow
