The self-styled Duchess of Kingston was a coarse and flighty woman who lived a life of scandal, dissipation and social decadence. She was married secretly in 1744 to the Hon. Augustus John Hervey, but they were soon separated and had no further contact. Twenty years later she married the Duke of Kingston while still married to Hervey. The Duke died after only a few months leaving his wife the whole of the estate on the condition that she remained a widow. Hervey, meanwhile, wished to remarry, and was anxious to prove his first marriage in order to file for divorce. She was tried by her peers for bigamy and found guilty; she fled to the continent and resumed her scandalous lifestyle in Paris, Rome and St. Petersburg, where she set up a brandy distillery.The third concerns a horrendous case of murder in Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk) on New Year's Day 1721. The two prisoners were convicted and duly hanged.

Five pieces of silver and silver plate:1. a late 19th century silver-plated double inkwell by WMF: two-lidded facet-cut cranberry glass inkwells flanking a central pen-rest modelled as a stag's head;2. a miniature early 19th century Sheffield-plated chamber stick with gadrooned border,;3. a cased set of six hallmarked silver coffee spoons by Jackson & Fullerton (1897);4. a small early 20th century hallmarked silver brandy-warmer with turned ebony handle;5. an early 19th century hallmarked silver Fiddle Pattern caddy spoon engraved with armorial.Condition Report: 1st glass inkwell - one of the lids lifts off silver-plate rather pitted and there is corrosion to the copper mount on the glass inkwell, otherwise in good order. 2nd inkwell - less problematical under the lid but some plate is missing. Glass on 2nd inkwell in good condition. Brandy warmer - quite tarnished but no dents noted or evidence of restoration.
