His early Diplomatic postings included Switzerland, Cuba, Peru, Washington, Bangladesh and Columbia. In 1986 he was appointed British Ambassador to Paraguay and in 1989 British Ambassador to Panama. His positions when not abroad included Parliamentary Clerk for the Foreign Office and Special Representative of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. He also worked for the EU Monitoring Mission based in Zagreb covering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and the Republic of Macedonia.
