A Pyrograph, Poker Work Picture, 19th/20th century, depicting "Vice Admiral of the White The Right Honourable Horatio, Viscount Nelson, Knight of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath."; 1758-1805, after Sir William Beechy pyrograph (Poker Work) on a mahogany Panel, Lord Nelson as ever a popular subject for collectors and artisans, 48x36cm, Note: His Name throughout the centuries used by countless Kings, statesmen, Admirals, Generals and Officers to rally the peoples in time of need and patriotism. A by-word for heroism like Drake he stands today as a monument of Empire. Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté, KB, killed at Trafalgar 21st Oct 1805, his body was placed in a cask of Brandy mixed with Camphor and Myrrh, which was then lashed to the Victory`s mainmast and placed under guard. Victory was towed to Gibraltar after the battle. Capt. Collingwood`s dispatches about the battle were carried to England aboard HMS Pickle and when the news arrived in London, a messenger was sent to Merton Place to bring the news of Nelson`s death to Emma Hamilton. Nelson`s body was unloaded at the Nore and taken to Greenwich, placed in a lead coffin, and wooden coffin made from the mast of L`Orient which had been salvaged after the Battle of the Nile. He lay in state in the Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich for three days, before being taken up river aboard a barge and taken into the Admiralty House for the night. The next day, 9 January, a funeral procession consisting of 32 admirals, over a hundred captains, and an escort of 10,000 troops took the coffin from the Admiralty to St. Pauls Cathedral. After a four-hour service he was laid to rest within a Sarcophagus originally carved for Cardinal Wosley. (LP)
