Haines (Joseph) A Satyr against Brandy, first edition, 2pp., drop-head title, a little soiled and creased at edges, [Wing H197], folio, Printed by Jos. Hindmarsh, 1683.⁂ A poem in heroic couplets on the transformation of brandy from a traditional drink of the lower classes to a favourite among reprobates of the higher echelons of society. Haines was a well-known figure of the stage in the late 17th century, first as a dancer (whom Pepys described as "incomparable") and then as an actor and writer/speaker of prologues and epilogues.
