A Bottle of 1865 Vintage "La Grande Marque Cognac" bearing the original, though partly indistinct label with red armorial heraldic shield bearing a contrasting cross-bottony. Still with original cork and capsule marked "This capsule issued by Customs Bill of Entry, Bill of Entry Office, Custom House". A secondary label states "This certificate and capsule with the small label thereon, is guarantee that the Brandy of which this bottle forms part has been taken charge of from the bonded warehouse, and bottled under the supervision of the Bill of Entry Officers, the bottles measure six to the gallon, that the strength is 14% under proof, and that the Brandy was shipped by La Grande Marque Co., of Cognac". Also present is a label: "PENNY & SNOOK, Wine & Spirit Merchants, High Street, Weymouth. 'PALE FOREIGN BRANDY' ". Historic Note: "Le Grande Marque" it seems was a consortium of Brandy producers organised in 1863 by one Jean Baptiste Camus to sell Cognac with that brand name, England being the first export market. The Brandy is likely to be something of a rarity as it would have been produced using ancient varieties of grape the existence of which were devastated by the Grape Phylloxera Aphid, the presence of which was first recorded in France in 1863, subsequent to which it spread through vineyards over much of the country. The epidemic was combated by the introduction of resistant Vines, which almost certainly were the saviour of the French wine industry but which could not emulate the flavour and character of the ancient varieties. The level of the Brandy is to the lower shoulder of the bottle.
