Original antique advertising poster for Cusenier Peach Brandy Liqueur de Peches A La Vieille Fine Champagne, featuring a dark haired lady, most likely Columbine, in a red dress and hat pouring Cusenier for a smiling Pierrot mime clown. Cusenier is a French brand of spirits that was founded in 1868 by Eugene Cusenier in Ornans, now part of the Pernod Ricard group. Pierrot is a stock character of pantomime and commedia dell'arte whose origins are in the late seventeenth-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris and known as the Comedie-Italienne; the name is a diminutive of Pierre (Peter), via the suffix -ot. His character in contemporary popular culture—in poetry, fiction, and the visual arts, as well as works for the stage, screen, and concert hall—is that of the sad clown, often pining for love of Columbine, who usually breaks his heart and leaves him for Harlequin. Poor condition, creasing, tears, folds, browning, backed on old linen with metal ringed holes at the top of the linen for hanging. Country of issue: France, designer: Pal, size (cm): 128x94, year of printing: 1900s
