1865 Royal Humane Society Large Bronze Life Saving Medal.This medal was awarded to Colonel S.J. Thorp of the Bombay Staff Corps. The reverse of the medal engraved “MAJOR S.J. THORP 30TH NOV 1865”. Fitted with ring for ribbon.Extract from the Royal Humane Society records: The incident which gave rise to the award occurred at 7am on the 30th November 1865 at Sholapore in East India. Major Thorp was a magistrate. A mus-sulman water carrier named Oosman was apparently drowning in the reservoir Mortu Bagh. Major Thorp swam across the reservoir and dived to recover the body and brought Oosman ashore where he was revived by rubbing his body and administrating brandy water”.
