Lieutenant-Colonel Wheetman John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex, a Deputy Lieutenant’s uniform, tailored by Meyer & Mortimer of London, dated 1952, including: a tunic and overalls, a peaked cap, a silver and crimson sash, a silver laced sword sling with web under-belt, a field service scabbard and black cover (lacking sword), a Sam Browne belt, brace and frog and two pairs of plated spurs, contained in a metal uniform trunk with mounted shaped brass plaque ‘The Right Hon’ble Viscount Cowdray, D.L.’. Provenance: Cowdray. Lt.-Col. Wheetman John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, b.27 February 1910, d. 19 January 1995. Fought in the Second World War, where he was severely wounded in the retreat to Dunkirk, his left arm was amputated. He was decorated with the award of Territorial Decoration and gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel between 1940 and 1941 in the service of the Home Guard. He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between September 1941 and December 1942, to the Under-Secretary of Air. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Sussex in 1945.
