During an election riot in 1835, Hornby was thrown over the parapet of old Salford bridge by an infuriated mob, and in 1841 during a similar riot he recalled "... It was then hardly safe for me to walk through the streets; my house was in danger and at last it was attacked, about 8 o'clock in the evening and every window was smashed. Fortunately I got back there before the front door was opened, and having a brace of pistols, I discharged one, and every man of that gallant crew ran away". His sons, Edward Hornby and William, were also MPs for Blackburn, and his third son, Albert, was the England cricket captain who lost the Test match which gave rise to the Ashes, at home against the Australians in 1882.

Various versions of the car were produced and this particular car is one of the later models a series IV saloon that featured an extra window behind the rear doors and a slightly flatter roof profile. Body number FSF20006. Presented in black with a beige vinyl interior featuring bench seat and column mounted four speed manual transmission with overdrive and power assisted steering. Cosmetically the car has had a fairly recent repaint that was not carried out to the best of standards and could ideally do with a repaint certainly in places if not the whole vehicle (see the condition report). Complete with early green log book and owners manual. Also supplied with some previous MOT certificates (see condition report). Buyer's premium of 10% (+VAT) applies to this lot The panel fit and condition of the vehicle is generally good with the exception of the paint-work which is of a poor standard. Most panels have micro-blistering with the worst the o/s front wing. The scuttle panel is in poor condition with signs of repair and corrosion around both wiper arms. There is a large section of paint missing from beneath the o/s wiper arm and heavy corrosion is apparent. The engine bay of the car is very tidy as is the boot area. The roof and both rear quarter panels have areas where the paint has shrunk and sunk. Both front and rear bumpers are straight but have signs of pitting on both. The front grille has rust on most areas. The interior is very presentable with good carpet set and only one small split in the front bench seat on the back rest o/s approx 1.5 inch long. Wood veneer on the dash is cracked. Period radio fitted. The spare wheel is present along with brace. Front tyres are both Hankook with good tread. Rear tyres are both Pace with good tread. Two 19th century goose wing knitting sheaths, and four knitting sticks. Longest 31 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The longest knitting stick has a metal brace around the handle presumably as a repair. There are numerous small scuffs and scratches to this stick but no further evidence of any splits, repairs or restoration. The second large stick is in generally good order. There is a fracture to the top edge approximately 1 cm in length which arches over the top and down the other side. There is slight movement here when pressed. Other than this there is no other significant damage, no repairs and restoration other than very minor surface scuffs and old stress marks. The largest of the three smaller sticks is in generally good condition with no damage, repairs or restoration other than minor scuffs and marks that one would expect. The middle size stick is again in generally good order with no condition issues. The smallest stick is nibbled at the end and there is a small loss to the top where the needle would sit. There is a small fracture here also. The metal stick is in good order.
