- Shortened chassis fitted with Syd Lawrence bodywork - Automatic transmission - A potent and stylish example with much history Almost as old as the model itself (which celebrates its sixty ninth anniversary this year), the tradition of building Bentley MKVI-based Specials is a long and proud one. However, very few of the resultant cars can claim to match the specification and performance of 'BDP 218'. Shortened by six inches and carrying a cruciform brace that has been "re-fabricated level with the side rails", its low-slung ladder frame chassis features independent front suspension, a leaf-sprung Salisbury 4HA rear axle, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and four-wheel servo-assisted disc brakes. Further benefiting from negative earth wiring, an alternator and electronic ignition, the rakish two-seater is powered by an early Bentley T-series / Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow type 6230cc OHV V8 engine coupled to three-speed GM automatic transmission. Said to have recorded "250bhp at the back wheels" while being set-up by Sigma Engineering of Dorset in circa 2000, the Bentley employs a relaxed 3.77:1 final drive ratio. Originally fitted to the Syd Lawrence car 'LXX 981' (see Bentley Specials & Special Bentleys by Ray Roberts), its lightweight fibreglass bodywork has since been modified to accommodate "a partially recessed spare wheel and small cubby box". Sporting a full set of instruments, wood-rim steering wheel, bucket seats, safety harnesses, painted wire wheels, twin aero screens, side-exit exhausts and a solid brass (but chrome-plated) windscreen by Bob Petersen engineering, 'BDP 218' looks every inch the period sportscar. Finished in British Racing Green with matching leather upholstery, this invigorating Bentley Special was purchased by the vendor in April 2007 since when it has been entrusted to respected specialists Royce Service & Engineering of Betchworth, Surrey who carried out a number of works for him in 2011 totalling over £9,000 for which invoices are on file. Choosing to date the car with reference to its Syd Lawrence bodywork (deemed to be the newest major component) rather than the 1950 donor chassis or running gear, the DVLA settled on 1974 as the year of manufacture when 'BDP 218' was re-registered in 1999. Reportedly a hoot to drive on the open road (and yet manageable around town thanks to its automatic gearbox and power-assisted steering), this scintillating Bentley is offered for sale with a good history file containing invoices, assorted old MoTs, magazine articles, correspondence and photographs. Accompanied by a Swansea V5 document, it is expected to possess a fresh MoT by the time of sale.

Lot 2026

The late 1920's proved to be a difficult period for P & M who had invested heavily in the Panthette 247cc vee twin designed by Granville Bradshaw. The new model, although technically excellent, was an expensive machine seeking buyers just as the effects of the Wall Street Crash started to bite and it is thought that only about 200 examples were produced before production ceased. Seeking a rapid way to revive the company's fortunes, P & M turned to Villiers, the Panthette frame being easily modified to accommodate the Villiers Mk IX-A 247cc twin port singles. Released in 1928, the new machine exceeded the performance of the Panthette, was cheaper to produce and enjoyed the favourable tax rate offered for machines weighing less than 200 lbs. The 1929 model season saw the adoption of the Villiers Mk-X A engine and for 1930 the Model 25 benefitted from a number of cosmetic enhancements as well as the adoption of a positive lubrication system with an oil tank mounted on the frames diagonal brace being pressurised from the crankcase to feed the engine and primary drive chain. Production of the Villiers powered 250cc continued with further detail refinements until 1932 when it was effectively replaced in the range by the 250cc ohv Model 40. The model 25 offered dates from 1931 and is fitted with a high level exhaust system. Attractively presented with a green and silver fuel tank, it is described as being an original, unrestored machine that is accompanied by some original Panther transfers.

Lot 2088

Following Paul Smart's success at the 1972 Imola 200 Formula 750 race aboard one of a brace of specially prepared desmodromic vee twin's promises of a replica were fulfilled in 1974 when a single batch of round case 750cc Super Sports were built as homologation specials. The new machines, running on 40 mm Dell'Ortos and equipped with Conti silencers (!) exuded an air of purpose. Barley legal for the road they remain the most sought after of all the exotic racing derived Ducati machines. Fortunately for enthusiasts everywhere, in 1975 Ducati introduced the 900Ss, a machine that shared the same dna as its predecessor whilst being built in greater numbers. The new model adopted the square case 860cc engine was retaining the cycle parts of the 750SS. Thus in its initial form the new model ran on wire spoked wheels, and was fitted with the half fairing and single seat together with the fibreglass fuel tank first seen on the 750SS. The following year the model, now in regular production, adopted a steel fuel tank and Lanfranconi silencers together with indicators, Veglia instruments, 32mm carburettors and an air cleaner. The new silencer and smaller carburettors robbed the model of some of its performance but the presence of a pair of the larger carburettors and a set of Conti's (often supplied with the machine) soon restored the performance. The 1981 example offered has been in the same family ownership from new and is described as being a "totally stock bike" that has never been restored and is presented in "good running order". It is offered with a selection of spares and retains the original silencers. The bike displays 48,000 miles on its odometer and is offered with a Mot certificate valid until the 5th June 2015 together with a Swansea V5C.

Lot 4030

PLEASE NOTE: Since the catalogue went to press we have been contacted by John Sprinzel who has confirmed that 'WJB 707' was 'certainly the fastest of the Sebring Sprites on the track'. He also recalls selling the Austin-Healey to the level crossing keeper's wife as a surprise present for her husband. The lady in question made quite an impression by (a) emerging from a taxi with a baby in her arms and (b) showing little interest in actually inspecting her prospective purchase! Mr Sprinzel later heard that 'WJB 707' had caught its new owner out on the first lap of a test day at Brands Hatch. Located not far from the relevant level crossing, Rob Walker's garage had been responsible for preparing the fastback and were also tasked with its repair. It is thus possible that they were the ones who replaced the Sprite's (Brands Hatch damaged?) aluminium bonnet with a fibreglass one. PLEASE NOTE: The 'original' bonnet which Stephen Bowen has retained is the fibreglass one that was fitted to 'WJB 707' when he bought the car in 1966. The original Williams & Pritchard alloy bonnet has never been in his possession and is presumed lost.     - A Works entrant on the 1960 Tour de Corse (Pat Moss/Ann Wisdom). - Rebodied by Williams & Pritchard for Ian Walker and nigh-on unbeatable in 1961. - The most original of the Sprinzel Sebring Sprites and owned since 1966 Further Info: First registered as `WJB 707' on 7th October 1960, this famous Austin-Healey began life as a Works Rally Car. Prepared by the BMC Competition Department for Pat Moss and Ann Wisdom to use on the Tour de Corse a few weeks later, the two-seater boasted Girling disc brakes, uprated suspension and wire wheels etc but retired from the event due to gearbox failure. Published in the September 1990 issue of Classic & Sportscar magazine, a letter written by next custodian Ian Walker recalled how: `Late in 1960, with the approval of John Thornley, I purchased WJB 707 on the understanding that it was to be converted to a Sebring Sprite and would be driven by myself, in a team of three organised by John Sprinzel, during the 1961 season. Each of the owners was to be responsible for his own conversion, the common denominator being Williams & Pritchard who were responsible for stripping the original bodies and replacing them with the aluminium version'. Having spent six years in the RAF including two-and-a-half as a Lancaster bomber rear gunner during WW2, Walker had a somewhat sang froid approach to personal safety. A capable circuit racer who had previously campaigned a Lotus Eleven, Elite and 17, he also appreciated the virtues of `adding lightness' to a car (indeed, his links to Colin Chapman would later result in the formation of the highly successful Ian Walker Team Lotus). Thus, when compared to the other Sprinzel Sebring Sprites `WJB 707' sported an even sleeker profile and lower kerb weight. Fitted with a smaller windscreen than its siblings - glass being heavier than aluminium - the two-seater also kept usage of steel to a bare minimum. The front inner wings and footwells were alloy as was much of the floorpan and bulkhead (though, the original steel was retained on the driver's side to mount the clutch and brake assemblies securely). The boot floor was cut out and there was precious little sheetmetal between the rear inner wings which were held in position by a brace bar, while the fuel tank was located via Dexion strips! Lot 4052

- A notably late Lotus Cortina MKI built in August 1966 - Converted into a Stage / Road Rally Car during 1999-2000 - New OMP seats, TRS harnesses and fresh MOT certificate Further Info: First road registered by London County Council on 15th September 1966, `KUC 964D' began life as a standard road going Lotus Cortina MKI (albeit a notably late example of the 3,306 made). Assorted photos and invoices on file show that it was reconfigured as a stage / road rally car some fifteen years ago. Though, whether or not its transformation involved a re-shell is unknown. The current monocoque appears authentic and as well as being gusseted and strengthened boasts such correct-type features as a small hump boot floor and original tramp bar mountings (rather than modified Escort ones). Opening the boot reveals an alloy fuel tank, offside-mounted battery, twin pumps, well secured spare wheel / jack / brace and stickers for the 2000 Premier Rally, 2000 Astra Stages, 2000 Robin Hood Forest Stages Rally, 2001 Cossack Rally, 2001 East Anglian Classic, 2001 John Overend Memorial Stages Rally, 2003 Bruce Robinson Rally, 2003 29th Targa Rusticana and 2007 Robin Hood Historic Forest Stages Rally. Dormant for several years, recent recommissioning has seen `KUC 964D' treated to new FIA-compliant OMP T-RS XL front bucket seats, TRS harnesses and Minilite-style alloy wheels. Starting readily upon inspection, its 1.6 litre engine sports twin Weber carburettors and green-painted cam covers (as fitted to Special Equipment models). As well as its iconic Alan Mann livery, the Ford plays host to a 170mph speedometer, Brantz International 2 Pro Rally Meter, passenger footbrace-mounted horn button, substantial rollcage, oversize wash / wipe switches and retro Gold Leaf Team Lotus / East African Safari stickers. Described by the vendor as being in `very good overall' condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork, this nicely presented Fast Ford is offered for sale with Stage Logbook, MSA Historic Rally Identify Form, expired FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form and current MOT certificate valid until March 2016.
