(20)⁂ The first is one of the earliest journals devoted to surgery and central to the development of surgery in Germany during the eighteenth century. It includes many contributions from abroad including Percival Pott on palsy, fractures & head wounds, Guerin on eyes, Hunter on teeth, Gesscher on amputation, Juville on hernia, amongst others. The last item is the fourth and much enlarged edition of the one of the most popular surgical texts of the 18th century, which went through many editions. Heister coined the term "tracheotomy" and designed a spinal brace.

The marquetry shows a palace-like architectural scene, with Solomonic columns, and through whose windows church domes and courtly gardens can be seen. The sogueada legs, in ebonised wood, are joined with crossbeams and a double iron brace in the centre.

Some old splits and chips. Some residual areas of an old dark shellac surface. Where this is worn or rubbed away, it reveals a good colour and patina. Screws to underside of top are possibly old replacements. The handle to the slide is possibly replaced, but it is in period taste and suits the piece well. Some movement to joins between legs and stem. The undersides of the legs have old holes where it appears later nails have been used to help secure these joins. The metal brace to the underside of the stem appears original. It has moved position slightly and been re-secured. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
