2002 Jaguar S-Type R Transmission: automaticMileage:90909The Jaguar S-Type is an executive car that debuted at the 1998 Birmingham Motor Show and was marketed by Jaguar for model years 1999-2008, reviving the nameplate of the company's 1963-68 S-Type as a four-door notchback saloon. The supercharged S-Type R (Jaguar STR for short) joined the lineup in 2002, and the hope was that it would compete with BMW's M5 and the Mercedes E55 AMG. The R was powered by the newly revised handbuilt 4.2-Litre V8 with an Eaton M112 supercharger, producing 400 bhp and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The R also has a rear apron, side-skirts, and front apron with built-in fog-lamps, a rear spoiler, a brace located near the rear subframe, and R badging on the boot lid and both front wings.Registered new on 31st May 2002 this well presented S-Type R is offered in black coachwork over a cream leather interior. It has had a mere three recorded owners from new and comes complete with a history file including previous MoT test certificates and the UK V5 registration document. These desirable supercharged ‘R’ derivatives are becoming harder to come by and are superb to drive let alone look at. Offered without reserve we are sure this will be a very comfortable and rather quick drive for the new owner!      Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 219

2010 Bentley Continental GT Supersports Transmission: automaticMileage:21000Unveiled in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Continental GT was a different animal. The Crewe-built cars numbers were impressive with the twin-turbo, VAG 6.0 litre W12 engines, developed in the VW Phaeton and stillborn W12 sports car, producing 552bhp and 479lb ft torque. This prodigious output was fed through a six-speed automatic box from the new A8 and distributed by the Quattro four-wheel drive system. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 196mph were significant for a car of this stature.  Some six years later, also in Geneva, Bentley unveiled their new 621bhp Continental Supersports which was indecently quick with 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph, making it the fastest and the most powerful production Bentley ever. With a revised 'Tiptronic' automatic gearbox employing a 'quick-shift' system, gear change times were reduced by 50%. In order to cope with the increased power, it was necessary to have carbon fibre reinforced silicon carbide ceramic disc brakes - the largest and most powerful brakes ever fitted to a production car. As the Supersports evolved Bentley managed to accidentally create a very limited-edition car, the two seat examples were not selling as hoped because at the time most of the Bentley ownership comprised a demographic of drivers who wanted four seats and a softer ride. Enter the SuperSport ‘comfort seat’ option, a four-seat option that still gave performance, clearly not that of the two-seater but it gave a very clean way for Bentley to exit what appeared to be a fabulous car but not for their then customer demographic, thus leaving those with the full two-seat example with a low production car and now highly desirable. This stunning low mileage Bentley Continental Supersports is a 2010, UK supplied, right hand drive example finished in metallic Onyx Black with Beluga and Newmarket tan leather trim. Presented with a pair of heated, two-piece, carbon fibre sports seats and Breitling analogue clock sitting above the £5,000 uprated NAIM premium satellite navigation by Bentley Bristol. Upgrades by Bentley have not stopped there, originally a Bentley Pangbourne demonstrator car, as many options as possible were specified including a Bentley warrantied and fitted Acropovic exhaust system which was circa £7,000 alone and added between 7-12bhp along with an uprated leather steering wheel. Where rear passengers would normally reside, a carbon fibre cross-brace spans the cabin, generating torsional rigidity, showing the real intent of the 'Supersports', this is a rarity now as many cars were converted by Bentley to four seat cars to help sales. Sitting on 20 alloy wheels, the car is fitted with carbon-ceramic brakes, adjustable suspension and a host of other options making it, effectively, a very luxurious 'Group A Touring Car' for the road with incredible power.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 174

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Resto-mod Transmission: automaticMileage:350Immaculate re-imagined Porsche CarreraRestored over many thousands of hoursCompletely bespoke with just one example madeThe early days of this exquisite example are slightly academic. It went from Germany to Japan (import documents enclosed) and then back to the UK. The real story begins in 2011 when it arrived with the vendor. The Porsche marque was the designer’s personal passion and with an award-winning restoration team around him they wanted to prove a point with this, the very pinnacle of the restorer’s art, the very best the car can be.There are elements here that if you had your own way, you still wouldn't imagine or consider. Originally built in March 1986, this is an original lefthand drive, ROW (rest of world), G-Series body, which was launched in ‘73 just before the 930 Turbo and developed to conform to the latest US crash test regulations. A taut body with no sunroof and the classic 3.2 litre Carrera engine planted at the rear end. It was to undergo a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration over 10 years to bespoke specification until it was finally registered on 1st June 2019 after approximately 500km and a 12-month snagging and evaluation process.Once completely stripped, the bare shell was dipped, hand-rolled steel wide arches fitted, to RSR specification. The rust-free body was strengthened and diligently prepared. The shell was finished using an 8-step paint process and painted in Porsche GT3 Grau schwarz, a nod to its younger sibling. A centre fill fuel tank in the forward luggage compartment together with a handmade, themed cap was installed. A ducktail/964 electric spoiler controlled from the cabin was fitted. The door handles mirrored the theme on the fuel tank cap and that same theme is subtly repeated throughout the car. With the addition of a one-off composite front bumper and splitter, an RSR-style rear bumper and to the rear, a fully rebuilt 3.2 litre engine running 964 cams with 46IDA (triple carb) PMO (USA) carburettors with K&N filters and hats. Turn the key and the MSD ignition and BK racing distributor fire. The cylinders are fully rebuilt and relined with machine work carried out by Redtek, assembly by Wrightune and tested on the BS Motorsport dynamometer. The headers are straight through units with all oil lines braided with a front fender cooling fan. It has a 915 gearbox (5-speed), fully rebuilt running a Wevo (USA) shifter and linkage and pushing out 231hp or 223.4 ft-lb torque. The engine was designed with a flat torque curve, unlike the original with its heavy inertia. This iteration reaches 209ft-lb at 3200rpm, versus the original which needed to climb to 4800rpm to reach the same, 209 ft-lb. These modifications result in a much freer and more responsive engine, when you put your foot down it goes! The vehicle retains that charming characteristic Porsche air cooled sound, complemented by a M&K (USA) GT3-style muffler with minimal baffle and a block-off butterfly valve controlled from the cabin to muffle sound in RH tip should you require. The engine bay itself is smoothed and lacquered with all fixings removed or hidden, including the wiring harness and coil. The engine and gearbox all use Clubsport rubber compounds for mountings and bushes, much care and testing were undertaken to find the perfect blend of bushings and mountings throughout the car. The front discs are converted to Rebel Racing products (USA) and enlarged to 28mm x 318mm at the front with 996 calipers and braided lines with the rear running 996 calipers and discs. Naturally, Zuffenhaus (USA) three-piece 17” Fuchs wheels can be found in each corner with 9” and 11” frosted finish, anodised rims and Toyo Proxes R1R tyres. The suspension takes the form of Bilstein HD Sport dampers and inserts with one-off machined and leathered front strut brace with themed fixed mounts. Through-body Elephant Racing (USA) hollow front and rear adjustable sway bars are fitted and anodized to match the colour theme. The torsion bars are 21mm at the front and 27mm to the rear with geometry set up for fast-road use by Northway Porsche. The headlamps are HID units with a high output alternator. Air conditioning is all electric and mounted in the luggage compartment with a modern fuse box with blade fuses. Heating is via an electric heater hidden in the luggage bay and piped into the cabin. The interior, also, is a thing of beauty. As exquisite as a pair of Edward Green shoes or a Patek Philippe watch; the design spec was to create a cockpit like a luxury apartment, simply a nice place to sit and enjoy. The seats are lollipop style, one-off houndstooth check colour and size of design, a bespoke material created for the builder by Achtung Kraft (USA). The centre console is also bespoke with twin stitch and a themed compartment with a re-modelled, more simple, dashboard sporting all new clocks; colour coded and calibrated. The doors and panels carry bespoke quarter cards with an alcantara glovebox, handles and headliner and complete with remote central locking. The footwells are not forgotten, snug with handmade wool carpet and mats piped in leather and one-off houndstooth check. The rear seats have been converted and boxed to house JL sub-speaker and MSD (USA) sparkbox. The steering wheel is a classic model as used on many iconic 1960s and 1970s cars with a double-wrapped, thick leather rim. There is also a Bluetooth stereo in a hidden compartment with the electric heater and the a/c controls. The JL amplifier is a three-channel unit with sub-woofers and themed removable covers. This all beautifully put together as the images demonstrate and as shown in the accompanying hard backed build book; a history documenting the car from arrival right through to the finished result including the shell in bare metal so detail can be examined. For the weekend away, there is even a matching leather bag in the same interior houndstooth style and, of course, the subtle theme.Like a Porsche, but better.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson A.R.A (British, 1889-1946)Hampton Court signed 'C.R.W. NEVINSON' (lower left)oil on canvas62.3 x 48 cm. (24 1/2 X 18 1/8 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceSale; Phillips, London, 10 November 1987, lot 58With David Messum, London, 1988Sale; Bonhams, London, 8 July 2016, lot 78, where acquired byLady DugdaleExhibitedLondon, Leicester Galleries, Paintings and Watercolours by C.R.W. Nevinson, October 1921, cat.no.6London, David Messum, British Impressions, A Collection of British Impressionist Painting 1880-1940, 23 June 1988, cat.no.68Literature'The Queen', Magazine, 15 October 1921'Drawing and Design', Magazine, July 1922'Drawing and Design', Magazine, June 1922Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson's fame rests primarily on the pictures he executed in his capacity as an Official War Artist during the First World War.However these now iconic works constitute but a small component of Nevinson's extensive output, which is overall more broadly concerned with the various themes of industry, leisure and landscape. In the immediate post-war years of 1919-1922 Nevinson painted pictures which he referred to as his 'peace' works. Despite his futurist and vorticist roots, Nevinson did not consider himself a 'modern' and publicly declared in the introduction to his first peace time exhibition; 'I wish to be thoroughly disassociated from every 'new' or 'advanced' movement; every form of 'ist,' 'ism,' 'post,' 'neo,' 'academic' or 'unacademic.' (C.R.W. Nevinson, catalogue introduction to the exhibition New Works by C.R.W. Nevinson at the Leicester Galleries, London, 1919). Indeed the 'peace' pictures, with a defiantly lyrical air, are a sharp turn away from the stylized mechanical aesthetic of his preceding output. This stance was upheld with his rather sharp-tongued review of 'isms' in his 1921 exhibition introduction where he introduced his public to 'Gagaism' ('The international curse of the senile who dominate all official Art Societies, especially in France') and 'Babaism' ('The propagandist sheep who bleat of pure art and significant form, and butt inanely for little periodicals').Nevinson's tendencies towards public declarations, often pointed and unsympathetic to his peers and supporters, invited rather unkind retort. He recalls 'The only oasis I had was in the friendliness and generosity of Oswald Greene, brother of the present Master of the Rolls, who used to drive us every weekend to his houseboat at Hampton Court' (C.R.W. Nevinson, Paint and Prejudice, Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1938, p.203). It is presumably on such a trip that Nevinson painted the present oil. Archetypal of the peace time works Hampton Court celebrates the leisure pursuits of the great British public in the immediate heady years of the interwar period. Our scene is likely a depiction of the view looking west from atop Hampton Court Bridge. The pier depicted at the left of the composition still stands today. The canvas throngs with the lively hubbub of the summer regatta. Yet rather than the full spectacle of the event, Nevinson chooses to direct our eye to the relaxed couple in the foreground, the young lady's hand lazily enjoying the fresh water. This simple, tranquil gesture is the antithesis to the wrought anxiety of the war works, a testament to how diverse Nevinson was as an artist. The July 1922 Drawing and Design review remarks 'to say that Hampton Court is a masterpiece of perspective in form, tone and colours, is to give no hint of its rare individual charm...' ('Drawing and Design', Magazine, July 1922).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Registration No: NOH 757Chassis No: B291SPMOT: ExemptFitted with an FB60 Rolls-Royce 4-litre straight-six engine mated to automatic transmissionRecently completed and ready to be enjoyedNew interior, hood, wheels and tyresBased around a 1953 R-Type, the build of NOH 757 including stripping the donor vehicle back to the bare chassis which was blasted and painted having been found to require no welding. All suspension parts and the braking system were then checked, cleaned and refitted whilst the brakes were converted to hydraulics front and rear and a remote servo fitted. The FB60 Rolls-Royce engine was stripped and checked over by a specialist, its alloy construction allowing not only for weight saving but also far more pleasant steering characteristics over the cast iron unit. The bodywork was constructed in the traditional manner using a hard wood frame, aluminium and ply covered with quality Everflex. The wheels were custom made by Torrino Wheels of Peterborough and shod with Blockley tyres. The interior, seats and doors have been trimmed in quality leather whilst the hood is of Mohair. Attention to detail is evidenced by the presence of the correct Bentley jack and wheel brace being present in the toolbox. Offered with V5c and a collection of photographs from the build NOH 757 is now described as having “very good” body, paint, interior, engine and transmission, this recently completed special is only being offered for sale to allow the vendor to concentrate on other projects.Introduced in 1946, the MKVI was Bentley's first post-WW2 model. Aimed at the emerging 'owner-driver' luxury car market, it was fitted with a freshly developed 4257cc engine mated to four-speed manual transmission. Suspension was independent by coil springs at the front and by leaf springs at the rear. Braking was by mechanically-assisted drums all-round. Unfortunately, the variable quality of steel available in the post-WW2 period meant that the MKVI's Standard Steel Saloon coachwork rarely lasted as long as Crewe had intended, and by the mid-1960s there were plenty of mechanically strong but cosmetically untidy cars running around. From that time onwards, the tradition of building Bentley MKVI-based Specials has been long and proud. A rare 3-door version of Ford's capable 4-wheel drive sports saloon from the eighties.Offered as Ford’s answer to the total traction trend in the mid-eighties at the 1985 Geneva Motor ShowCologne 2.8 V6-engine producing 162bhp with a superb V6 soundtrack Rugged Ferguson four-wheel-drive transmissionStaggering all-weather grip, a balanced chassis and speed to rival the trend-setting QuattroOnly 35,010km by its one French owner complete with a UK NOVADashing three-door styling shared by its Cosworth sibling and presenting in great overall conditionFord's all-wheel drive family hatch was developed to extend the usability of its household name with a brace of driven axles and a tough, naturally-aspirated V6. So popular did the concept prove in its day that the XR4x4 superseded the rear-wheel drive XR4i that came before it. It seemed British buyers of the eighties were becoming enthusiastic by the notion of added traction. You can understand why, given that back in 1985, when the XR4x4 was first shown with its twin viscous differential-equipped driveline at the Geneva motor show, the four-wheel drive segment was comparatively tiny. The XR4x4 promised familiar hatch usability with added year-round dependability in a familiar package. It was unique. The car packed a punch, too, Ford's 2.8-litre Cologne V6 providing the early three-door with 162hp at 5,700rpm, meaning the Sierra XR4x4 could hit 60mph in 8.5 seconds - ranking it alongside some of the era's most interesting hatchbacks, including the much smaller 1.6 Peugeot 205 GTI. Obviously Ford's ambition for the Sierra was different, but its rear-bias, all-wheel drive system meant there was still fun to be had in the 1,262kg machine.Obviously smitten when the Sierra 2.8i, 4X4 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show the cars French first owner went and bought one and kept it all his life until purchased by our vendor and imported to the UK recently. The early cars utilised the 3-door Sierra Cosworth bodyshell and were primarily left-hand drive. He only covered some 35,010km (22,000miles) in the car over the 35-years of his ownership Since its arrival in the UK, it’s been subject to a full mechanical health check that included a complete replacement of the fuel system with a new tank, fuel filters and pump. The cooling system was totally gone through with a new radiator and hoses. It had a full service including oil and filter, spark plugs, HT leads, distributor and rotor arm and was treated to new wiper blades, fuses, battery and bulbs.Low mileage, dashing three-door styling shared by its Cosworth sibling and presenting in great overall condition. SpecificationMake: FORDModel: SIERRA 2.8I 4X4Year: 1985Chassis Number: WFOEXXGBBEFM36260Registration Number: 5659RT61Drive Side: Left-hand DriveClick here for more details and images

A rather special F1 Spider in Bianco with substantial upgrades. An amazing UK-supplied, right-hand drive F1 gearbox example that’s been extensively upgradedUpgrades include a Stradale gearbox, engine re-map, performance exhaust with 'De-Cat' pipes, F430 alloy wheels, aluminium brake calipers etcNow finished in Bianco with full black leather and showing 40,900 milesGood history file including all the usual manuals and invoices detailing recent expenditureOffered at a guide that seems great value for money when you consider the investment made into this carThe 360 Spider is Ferrari's twentieth road-going convertible and the 360 was always designed with a Spider variant in mind. Since removing the roof of a coupé reduces the torsional rigidity, the 360 was built for strength in other areas and Ferrari designers strengthened the sills, stiffened the front of the floor pan, and redesigned the windscreen frame. The rear bulkhead had to be stiffened to cut out engine noise from the cabin. The convertible's necessary dynamic rigidity is provided by additional side reinforcements and a cross brace in front of the engine. Passenger safety is ensured by a strengthened windscreen frame and roll bars. The use of light aluminium throughout results in the Spider weighing in only 60 kg (130 lb) heavier than the coupé.Offered here is an amazing UK-supplied, right-hand drive F1 gearbox example that’s been extensively upgraded. Upgrades include a Stradale gearbox, engine re-map, performance exhaust with 'De-Cat' pipes, F430 alloy wheels, aluminium brake calipers etc. During the upgrade process, the decision was taken to finish the car in Bianco which is complemented by a full black leather interior and the odometer now reads 40,900 miles. There are numerous invoices on file detailing the extensive work and expenditure this particular 360 has had lavished on it over the years. Quite simply we encourage interested parties to come and see this example at the NEC to fully take in and understand the value for money on offer here.SpecificationMake: FERRARIModel: 360 F1 SPIDERYear: 2002Chassis Number: ZFFYT53C000127177Registration Number: MD51 CYOEngine Number: 65614 Odometer Reading: 40900 MilesMake: Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

A superbly engineered ultimate Land Rover, created by the brains behind marque experts 'LOF'.A labour of love turning a 2011 Defender Puma XS into the ultimate performance Land RoverFord Performance 5.0-litre 'Coyote' Gen 2 V8 engine with 450bhp and 550Nm - a far superior V8 installation upgrade than using a Chevrolet LS-engineGalvanised Marsland (OEM) chassis with the V8 mounted in the exact position that the diesel engine was fittedAshcroft Transmissions created a custom, one-of-one, manual 6-speed gearbox, designed and installed to fit to the V8 engine and accept the standard Defender transfer boxLOF EXTREME-spec output shaft, coupled to an upgraded LT230 LR transfer box rebuilt by Winchester Gears, fitted with larger bearings, stronger shafts and an ATB centre differentialRebuilt front & rear axles, new Winchester gears, automatic torque biasing differentials front and back, LOF 6-pot big brake kit and HD driveshaftsFull 'Lucari' interior and other upgrades (aluminium hinges, door handles, etc.)Test proven for some 500 miles, professionally detailed, ceramic coated, plus an MOT inspection was completed by a main dealerFollowing the successful reception of the all-new Land Rover Discovery in 1989, it was decided to give the traditional Land Rover its own name: 'Defender'. Despite, or perhaps because of, being recognisably related to the very first Land Rover of 1948, the Defender retained a steadfastly loyal customer base, indeed, in the UK in 2013 it even managed to out-sell the Range Rover.Big enough for all the family plus a brace of Labradors and luggage in the back, long-wheelbase Defenders remain highly usable, long-term keepers thanks to their practicality and their personality. For decades, the long-wheelbase model has found favour with diverse buyers, from armies and police forces to country hotels and farmers. In more recent times, Defenders have transcended to a new and different level, with tuning companies adapting them into high-performance driving machines, still with all the innate character, but with some startling new additions! The Defender 110 presented here is quite exceptional. Starting life as a 2011 TDCi XS model with the four-cylinder, 2.4-litre Puma unit, this latest engine was coupled to a revised, quieter transfer case and a new six-speed manual gearbox, which allowed a longer top gear for quiet, efficient long-distance cruising.Enter 'LOF' of Leicestershire, a specialist Land Rover manufacturing business, run by a chap whose Land Rover knowledge is quite simply encyclopaedic. Renowned for their engineering prowess, they manufacture and sell superb, uprated clutches, brakes, and other components for Land Rovers. 'Attention to detail' dictate how they manufacture and this ethos we see with this vehicle project.LOF set about creating the ultimate 110, to showcase the best of their products, plus some other choice offerings, going down the route of installing, at the heart of this vehicle, an American V8 engine. Many Land Rover tuners have done this, but to no greater effect than we see here - a more adaptable, sophisticated Ford-based 5.0-litre 'Coyote' Gen 2, V8 engine was utilised. Burbling through an adjustable exhaust value system, it is as tuneful as you would want from such a special engine. Around this, the rest of the vehicle was enhanced with specialist, high-quality products to create a super-powerful, yet very driveable high-performance 4x4. Properly designed, built, tested, and even ceramic coated, this is one hell of a Land Rover. With an amazing specification sheet (full details on request), an exemplary finish and attention to detail, this 110, nicknamed 'The DefStang', offers presence and performance to rival that of the £143,370 G63 'G-Wagon' or indeed Land Rover's own £150,000 Defender Works V8 70th Edition.SpecificationMake: LAND ROVERModel: DEFENDER 110 COYOTE 5.0 V8Year: 2011Chassis Number: SALLDHMS7BA824808Registration Number: V8 VBNTransmission: Manual Engine Number: 101119033556244DTDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Bespoke Click here for more details and images

Pair: Chief Steward A. W. Wiltshire, B.E.M., Mercantile Marine, who survived several days in an open boat following the loss of the Houlder Brothers’ ship Beacon Grange to torpedo attack in the North Atlantic in April 1941, for which he was awarded the British Empire Medal, whilst in his 60th year British War and Mercantile Marine War Medals (A. W. Wiltshire.) somewhat later issues (see footnote), nearly extremely fine (2) £70-£90 --- Note: The recipient’s British Empire Medal was sold in these rooms in April 2006. B.E.M. London Gazette 4 June 1943. The original recommendation states: ‘For long service in dangerous waters. He was serving in the S.S. Beacon Grange when she was torpedoed in April 1941 and acquitted himself well.’ Arthur William Wiltshire, who was born at Southampton in 1883, appears to have entered the Mercantile Marine in the Edwardian era, and served during the Great War as a Chief Steward in the Royston Grange - having lost his original Mercantile Marine and British War Medals aboard the Beacon Grange, he was issued with replacements in June 1943. The exact date he joined the ship’s company of Houlder Brothers’ Empire Grange remains uncertain, but it is not without interest that prior to her sinking in April 1941, she had already sustained severe damage as a result of two bomb hits received off the coast of Scotland in August 1940 (a full account of this incident appears in the Houlders’ history Sea Hazard 1939-45). As verified by Wiltshire’s recommendation for his subsequent award of the B.E.M., however, he was very much aboard her when she was torpedoed and sunk in the North Atlantic by the U-552 on 27 April 1941: ‘The liner Beacon Grange, Captain A. B. Friend, left Loch Ewe on the north-west coast of Scotland on 26 April 1941. At about 2.20 on the following morning she was attacked by enemy aircraft which presumably radioed her position to a submarine as she was intercepted at 2.30 on the following afternoon (the 27th) and hit with three torpedoes. The submarine then surfaced at a distance of approximately 500 yards and members of her crew took photographs. Meanwhile those on board the liner went to the boats as she was sinking rapidly. The Beacon Grange was finally sunk by gunfire. Two boats got away. The captain’s, containing 41 all told, was picked up by the British corvette Gladiolus two days later. The second boat with the First Officer and 38 others was picked up six days later by the Belgian steam trawler Edward Anseele. Two engineers were killed by the explosion of the torpedoes and several men were wounded, but there were no fatalities during the time that the boats were adrift (A Dictionary of Disasters at Sea refers). At the time of submitting his official report into the sinking, Captain A. B. Friend recommended several crew members for their good work in his boat, but was not then aware of the fate of the First Officer’s boat. Wiltshire is not among those listed by Friend, so we must assume he ‘acquitted himself well’ in the latter boat. The captain of the U-552 was Erich Topp, who was awarded the Knight’s Cross for his services in the first half of 1941, and who added Oak Leaves and Swords to his decoration in the following year. Wiltshire, who was 59 years of age when recommended for his B.E.M., next joined the El Argentino, and was lucky to avoid a second sinking when she was sent to the bottom of the North Atlantic by enemy aircraft on 26 July 1943, having come ashore from her for leave earlier that month. His final wartime commission was aboard the Rippingham Grange from September 1943 until the end of hostilities, with the exception of a brace of voyages in the Cardesa between April and June 1944. Additionally entitled to the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, and War Medal 1939-45, he retired in August 1949.
