THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN A VERY RARE 60 BORE SEVEN-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK GOOSE RIFLE BY HENRY NOCK, LONDON, GUNMAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, CIRCA 1791-3 with browned twist barrels arranged as six around a central seventh, signed in full on the rib and rifled with seven grooves, fitted with silver fore-sight, engraved breech decorated with foliage and with gold-lined vent, engraved case-hardened breech block variously numbered on the face '2917 and '103', engraved tang decorated with foliage inhabited by waterfowl and incorporating a folding back-sight of two leaves set at right angles, stepped bevelled lock signed within a gold-lined oval, fitted with bolt safety-catch, gold-lined pan, and roller (restorations including later cock screw and gold), figured walnut half-stock (the underside cracked and expertly repaired diagonally from the beneath the lock to the rear ramrod-pipe), chequered grip, engraved blued iron mounts comprising trigger-guard decorated with a hound putting up a brace of birds on the bow and with pineapple finial, butt-plate with a further vignette, rear ramrod-pipe en suite with the trigger-guard, a further browned ramrod-pipe (the metal parts expertly refinished), and later brass-tipped ramrod 51.5 cm; 20 ¼ in barrels A similar rifle by this maker made for H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in April 1793 is in the Royal Collection at Windsor. Colonel Thomas Thornton, perhaps the most flamboyant sportsman and falconer of the 18th century, author of 'A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England' and 'A Sporting Tour through France' was a notable exponent of Nock's goose rifles. For an account of Nock's seven barrelled naval and also sporting guns see Blackmore 1955, pp. 165-182 The engraving on the mounts is probably by the master engraver William Palmer (1737-1812). His accounts for the years 1791, 1792 and 1793 record 3, 9, and 7 volley guns respectively, decorated by him. See Clancy & Griffin (privately published), p. 18.

A VICTORIAN DEAL, OAK AND PAINTED TOOL CHEST, SECOND HALF 19TH C the underside of the lid painted with royal arms and inscribed Jos Thripp [sic] & Sons Coachmaker to her Majesty, the fitted interior containing 19th and early 20th c tools including plough, moulding, smoothing, panel and side fillister planes by various makers, router, mortice gauge mitre square, plated brace, augers, patterns, saws, mallet and stock of hand made nails in three compartments, 57cm h, 61 x 98cm, keyThe famous West End firm of coachbuilders was founded by John Thrupp in London in the mid 18th c and survived until 1967. In 1858 the firm under his successors Robert and Charles Joseph Thrupp merged with that of the coachbuilder George Maberly (1797-1883). Thrupp and Maberly were appointed Coachmakers to the Queen in 1885. There is no reason to suppose the painting of the Royal Arms and inscription is of significantly later date, notwithstanding the curious misspelling of Thripp for Thrupp and use of the old style name when the firm was trading as Thrupp and Maberly. It is in good, but unrestored, condition has been in the present cabinet makers ownership for many decades and it would therefore be reasonable to infer that the original owner was some highly skilled tradesman proud of his connection - whether journeyman or long time employee - of this most illustrious of British coachbuildersIn good original condition, stored for many years in a workshop, the exterior much encrusted with dirt and grim, knocks and scratches, the interior clean
