Central Asia, modern day Turkmenistan, probably Yomud, but maybe Chodor peoples, ca. late 19th century CE. A section of a tent band, made of hand-knotted wool pile in bright red, cornflower blue, black, and cream, on a simple woven background. The iconography includes three flowers near the top, a maze-like linear pattern, and three flowers above that; in a register above them are three six-sided, abstract figures above a simple linear border. The entire pattern is within a double border. Size: 14.45" W x 25" H (36.7 cm x 63.5 cm)Woven tent bands are crucial components of trellis tents, which the nomads who have lived in the region for 1500 years use as their homes. Bands wrap around the lower part of the wooden roof struts, providing the tension necessary to brace the roof dome and support the tent as strong winds roar across the steppes. These bands are made by Turkmen women, woven in one piece on a narrow, horizontal loom placed on the ground outside the tent. A single band can take up to three years to complete. In complete form (this is a fragment), one can often "read" a story through the abstract iconography. OSBORN ROBERT: (1904-1994) American Satiric Cartoonist, Illustrator and Author. Artist of the hapless WWII character 'Dilbert' and later known for his caricatures of presidents from Lyndon Johnson through to Ronald Reagan. A.L.S., Bob Osborn, ten pages, folio, Salisbury, Connecticut, 14th May 1994, to Herbert Mitgang. Osborn prepares his correspondent 'Brace! For a long-winded reply to your kind letter.' Further complimenting Mitgang '…your review of the Hand biography is excellent and it ought to rightfully inspire people to buy & read it.' Continuing 'One Sunday night on the Harlem R.R. “Rattler” heading for N.Y. I saw Mr. Hand 2 seats ahead facing me… Luckily I had a 10” drawing pad and a black pencil and started to draw that superb, integrated worn… compelling face. The impression of him was so strong the drawing worked. It is now in the Beinecke Library… along with 1,000 of pictures I did… & liked… from 1910 on. Lucky Osbo!' Further explaining 'that the human face… prints relentlessly… the acts & characteristics of a person's life and behaviour (see Nixon's… or the cheap, shallow mug of that Irish clown Ronny R. or his vapid star-crossed wife.' Concluding by discussing the image of Nixon in The New Republic and The Village Voice and in conclusion, reflects on his health 'bed ridden, blood transfused… & now suffering from the eyes…' In neat bold script, accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Osborn. With a blind embossed paper signet seal at the foot. A very small printed identification slip is neatly affixed at the base. Some extremely minor overall creasing and very light dust staining and two very slight traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise a clean and attractive document overall, about VG Andrews Windsor (1467-1543) English Nobleman, Keeper of the Great Wardrobe from 1504 until his death. King Henry VIII's household was the home for many animals and pets (he kept ferrets, his first wife Catherine of Aragon owned a monkey; canaries and nightingales could be found in ornamental birdcages hanging in the windows at Hampton Court) however it was his dogs, particularly beagles, spaniels and greyhounds, that the King considered his favourites. As illustrated by the present document, the monarch's dogs were adorned with decorative collars of velvet (permitted only to Royal dogs) and the Royal leash boys were equally handsomely attired. King Henry VIII regularly sent dogs (all garnished with a good iron collar) as gifts to foreign leaders. It has been recorded that some sixty-five dog leashes were found in the King's closet upon his death. Henry VIII was the second monarch of the Tudor dynasty and has been described as 'one of the most charismatic rulers to sit on the English throne'. The monarch notably initiated the English Reformation, thereby greatly expanding royal power, and the scale and complexities of his legacy are such that, in their work Henry VIII in History (2012) Betteridge and Freeman state 'throughout the centuries [since his death] Henry has been praised and reviled, but he has never been ignored'. Provenance: Formerly part of the Enys Collection of Autographs and Manuscripts.
