§ Mary Fedden, OBE, RA (British, 1915-2012) Anna's Flowers signed lower left "Fedden 1986" watercolour on hand-made paper 20 x 18cm (8 x 7in) Provenance: The New Grafton Gallery, 49 Church Road, Barnes, London, SW13. These flowers may possibly have belonged to Mary's long time friend Anna Ford, who mentions Mary's frequent painting of flowers she was given by friends in a 1998 Telegraph article. Mary Fedden OBE was one of Britain's best-known and most sought after painters, though full recognition, which accompanied her election to the Royal Academy in 1992, came late in life. Mary Fedden was born in Bristol on August 14 1915. Shortly after her 17th birthday, Mary Fedden enrolled at the Slade, becoming the youngest student at the college at the time. She learnt to draw, acquiring a great sureness of line and draughtsmanship, and was inspired by her friend Vladimir Polunin, who workedc for the Diaghilev Ballet and taught her theatre design. Mary Fedden painted sets for him in brilliant colour. It was through Polunin that she first met Julian Trevelyan, (see lots 212, 294-297), then married to his first wife Ursula. Two most important influences on her work were Matisse and Ben Nicholson. In 1951, after the break-up of Trevelyan's first marriage, he and Mary Fedden were married and they travelled widely together, sketching and working up the paintings went they returned home. Their marriage was a very close one, both intellectually and physically, and they fell asleep holding hands for nearly 40 years. During the later Fifties and early Sixties both artists taught at the Royal College of Art, Trevelyan teaching printmaking and Fedden painting, as the first woman to teach in the painting school. David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, Allen Jones and RB Kitaj were taught by her there. Mary Fedden's work was shown at most major galleries, including the Redfern Gallery from 1953, the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol, Heal's Mansard Gallery and the New Grafton Gallery in London. From 1984 to 1988 she was president of the Royal West of England Academy. In 2008 the Portland Gallery held a major retrospective with 125 of her paintings, executed over six decades.
