It was first given a public reading at the house of Michel Leiris in March 1944, directed and produced by Albert Camus and including Simone de Beauvoir, Dora Maar and Jean-Paul Sartre in the cast. This first London theatrical performance was produced by William Jay and took place at the Watergate Theatre for two weeks in October 1950.
