David Hockney is a British artist who was born on July 9, 1937, in Bradford, England. He is known for his contributions to the pop art movement and his depictions of Southern California swimming pools, as well as his portraits and landscapes. Hockney studied at the Bradford College of Art before attending the Royal College of Art in London. His early work included paintings that featured gay themes and he became a part of the British pop art scene in the 1960s.Hockney's art is characterized by bright colors and a playfulness that often incorporates elements of humor. In addition to painting, he has also worked in other mediums, such as printmaking and photography. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and he has received numerous honors, including being made a member of the Order of Merit in 2012.Hockney has also been an advocate for new technologies in art, experimenting with iPad drawing and other digital media. Peter Phillips, British b.1939 - Leolocation, 1969; acrylic on card, signed, titled, dated and annotated on the reverse 'Peter Phillips, Study for a silk screen print 'Leolocation' 1969', 54 x 49 cm (ARR) Note: this work is a study for a silk screen print made in an edition of 3000 in 1970. A sample of the paper to be used, printing instructions and a negative for printing the image of the machine are included on the reverse. One of the leading figures of British Pop Art, Phillips studied at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney, Allen Jones, R.B. Kitaj and Patrick Caulfield. Phillips took an interest in the aggressive American advertising and montage style work he saw through the work of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Upon being awarded the Harkness Fellowship he moved to New York, where he exhibited alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist, making a name for himself as a preeminent Pop artist in New York. He juxtaposes everyday imagery to subvert mass-media culture. .His works are in the collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A retrospective of his work was held at the Tate, London.

The flower study has sporadic handling creases to the outer edges. The Metropolitan Opera poster has cockling to the paper throughout - possbily rolled in the past. There are feint large/medium sized foxing spots in evidence to the margins and expososed areas of white paper.
