David Hockney R.A. (British, born 1937)The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven) – 19 February iPad drawing in colours, 2011, on wove paper, signed, dated and numbered 17/25 in pencil, the full sheet, framedSheet 1400 x 1050mm (55 x 41 1/2in)Footnotes:The iPad drawings that constitute The Arrival of Spring series by David Hockney might have been received at first with a hint of suspicion when they were introduced in the Royal Academy A Bigger Picture blockbuster exhibition in 2012. Some questioned the choice of the iPad as an artistic tool, others complained about the digital rendering, yet all were taken aback by David Hockney's ability to revolutionise landscape paintings at this stage of his career, embracing the digital revolution of the 21st century. Just over ten years later, The Arrival of Spring iPad drawings have become some of the most instantly recognisable and highly sought-after works in the artist's oeuvre. They have come to define the David Hockney of the noughties, celebrating the Yorkshire landscape by depicting the impact of the incoming Spring from January to June 2011. As an eager exponent of drawing first on an iPhone then on an iPad, David Hockney proved that digital advances were not to be feared but celebrated, praising the iPad as 'a fantastic medium for landscape', helping to capture the rapid changes of light better than any other medium could allow. The strength of these works is also in how they inscribe themselves within an important history of landscape paintings, one especially dear to British art. Constable, Monet, Turner, Claude, Spencer or Van Gogh come to mind and their approach to nature continues to impact an artist who, after many years spent in the Californian sun, became fascinated by the spectacle of the changing seasons, and the English Spring in particular. As such, Hockney further enhances his position as one of the most important artists of our time, continuously challenging the viewers and artworld's expectations of landscape paintings, pushing the boundaries of creation and medium, making art a welcome field for all. The queues to go and experience the first exhibition of his iPad drawings amongst paintings and videos at the Royal Academy in 2012, and the enthusiastic responses said it all. We are thrilled to present the following three works from The Arrival of Spring series in this sale. Each beautifully capturing the landscape, light, and colours of Hockney's beloved birth county, Yorkshire, slowly waking up to Spring. A season many now associate with Hockney's later work. Here, art and nature complement each other at their best, in works that have become just as historically relevant to art in the 21st century as those of Constable and Turner. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

I had fallen in love with Europe again in 1967; it had been four or five years since I travelled around. I’d been so full of America for five years, but coming back to Europe you realise it’s certainly more interesting to drive around than America. America is wonderful as landscape, but every time you pull into a restaurant you know what the menu’s going to be. The thing is I love glamour places. I love going to places that have glamour. So any place that’s new for me is good. I like to travel…“ (Zit. nach: David Hockney, Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink, London 1978, o.S.).

Comes with two postcards, comprising "A Suffolk Child" by John Constable printed for V & A museum and the Blake's etching. Published by Bernard Jacobson 1976. 13 x 11.5cm ( 5" x 4 6/8") From the Bernard Jacobson Gallery Collection Sir Peter Thomas Blake CBE RDI RA (born 25 June 1932) is an English pop artist. He co-created the sleeve design for the Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. His other works include the covers for two of The Who's albums, the cover of the Band Aid single "Do They Know It's Christmas?", and the Live Aid concert poster. Blake also designed the 2012 Brit Award statuette. Blake is a prominent figure in the pop art movement. Central to his paintings are his interest in images from popular culture which have infused his collages. In 2002 he was knighted at Buckingham Palace for his services to art. From the late 1950s, Blake's paintings included imagery from advertisements, music hall entertainment, and wrestlers, often including collaged elements. Blake was included in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. In the "Young Contemporaries" exhibition of 1961 in which he exhibited alongside David Hockney and R. B. Kitaj, he was first identified with the emerging British Pop Art movement. Blake won the (1961) John Moores junior award for Self Portrait with Badges. He came to wider public attention when, along with Pauline Boty, Derek Boshier and Peter Phillips, he featured in Ken Russell's Monitor film on pop art, Pop Goes the Easel, broadcast on BBC television in 1962. From 1963, Blake was represented by Robert Fraser placing him at the centre of Swinging London and bringing him into contact with leading figures of popular culture. Blake had his first solo exhibition with Robert Fraser Gallery in 1965 and appeared on the front cover of LIFE International in a photograph by Lord Snowdon. Blake was given the final exhibition held at Robert Fraser Gallery which closed in 1969. The same year, Blake had his first exhibition with Waddington Galleries, owned by Leslie Waddington who became his lifelong supporter and representative. In 1999, Blake painted Leslie Waddington with Portrait of a Young Man by Hans Memling. Blake participated in Prince Edward's charity television special The Grand Knockout Tournament in 1987. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

A good run of issues of the foremost anti-establishment underground press magazine of the 1960s, subject to a famous obscenity trial in the UK in 1971. (34)

HOCKNEY, DAVID1937 BradfordTitel: "Stage". Datierung: 1964. Technik: Mischtechnik auf Papier. Maße: 35,5 x 28cm. Bezeichnung: Betitelt, monogrammiert und datiert unten rechts: Stage. DH. 64. Rahmen/Sockel: Rahmen.
