After David Hockney (British 1937-): 'Pool with Two Figures 1971', original lithograph exhibition poster 'A Retrospective - The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York June - August 1988' signed dated by David Hockney 1988, 76cm x 94cm Provenance: from the collection of the late Cavan O'Brien of Bridlington who was employed by Marlborough and Fischer Fine Art London (further details with the picture) Condition Report Click here for further images, condition, auction times & delivery costs
LESLIE HURRY [1909-78] Figures, 1973. gouache. signed. Provenance: John Hurry Armstrong [the artist's nephew, to whom his estate was left]; private collection, UK. 28 x 28 cm [overall including frame 42 x 42 cm]. One of the Neo-Romantic group of artists in the 1940s, including Graham Sutherland, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, John Craxton, Michael Ayrton, etc. A very fine painter, currently hugely underrated. These days he is probably better known for his theatre designs, which he regarded as a job, preferable to teaching - unfortunately he was one of the greatest theatre designers [much better than David Hockney], so these have rather overshadowed his normal paintings, which he considered to be his best work. The Tate Gallery collection includes several of his paintings. [good condition - unexamined out of frame]. Buyers premium of 20% [+ VAT] is payable.

Duncan Grant (1885-1978) PORTRAIT OF LINDY GUINNESS, c.1965 oil on board Purchased from Christie's by Jonathan Riley, Emscote Lawn;Private collection, Dublin;Dickon Hall Fine Art, Belfast;Collection of Dr Henry McKee, 1988;Whyte's, 29 September 2008, lot 6;Private collection Francis Spalding, Duncan Grant: A Biography, Chatto and Windus, London, 1997, p.434 Lindy Guinness, also known as Lady Dufferin, was born in 1941, the daughter of Loel Guinness and his second wife, Lady Isabel Manners. She first met Duncan Grant when she was seventeen and was encouraged by him to paint, subsequently studying at Chelsea School of Art and the Slade, and with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg. Lindy continued to visit Charleston regularly to paint with Grant until his death in 1978. She and Grant painted each other regularly and she was instrumental in encouraging the important 1964 retrospective exhibition of his work at Wildenstein, London. Lindy Guinness continues to exhibit regularly at the Ava Gallery on the grounds of her home at Clandeboye, Bangor. Duncan Grant was a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group and along with his partner, Vanessa Bell, her sister Virginia Woolf and his brief loves Maynard Keynes and Lytton Strachey, defined the British arts world of the pre-war period. This mantel was taken up by a younger generation of post-war Pop artists, including David Hockney, who was given early support and encouragement from Sheridan Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 5th Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, and husband of Lindy Guinness. Lord Dufferin was co-owner of the Kasmin Gallery, which opened in 1963 and showed the works of Hockney and Lucian Freud, who was married briefly to Lord Dufferin’s sister, Caroline Blackwood. After their own marriage in 1964, Lord and Lady Dufferin became central figures of the London art scene in the 1960s. 24 by 20in. (61 by 50.8cm)
John Ridgewell (1937-2004) Still life with wild flowers on a ledge before a surreal background Signed, oil on board, together with a study of snowdrops in a blue and white jug on a ledge by the same artist, 65cm by 60cm and 29.5cm by 24.5cm respectively (2) Provenance: From the Artist's Estate See Illustration Born in Essex in 1937, John Ridgewell studied at Colchester School of Art between 1954-8 where he was taught the skill of wood engraving by John O'Conner, who was related to the surrealist painter Paul Nash. In 1958 John entered the Royal College of Art aged just 21, he was a student at the same time as David Hockney and R B Kitaj. On graduation he accepted a position to teach at Scarborough School of Art from 1961-6, leaving to focus solely on painting. His artistic style was strongly influenced by the work of Georges Braque in 1956, who John admired throughout his life. John's distinctive artistic style developed during his time in Scarborough where he was inspired by the dramatic landscape around him. It was during his time in Yorkshire that John began to represent and interpret landscape in the surrealist style, which became characteristic of his work. Throughout his life he exhibited in mixed shows at the New Art Centre, Piccadilly Art Gallery and Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He had a loyal connection with the Austen Hayes Gallery, York. Austen Hayes believed in John's work and held a number of one man exhibitions in the gallery in the 1960's. He also exhibited at the Grape Lane Gallery and Minstral Galleries.
