Lot 220

1961 Lotus Elite (Type 14) Series 2 Transmission: manualMileage:65779The  incomparable Colin Chapman re-wrote the rulebook with many of his sports and racing cars. His focus though, was always weight. Combined with body-stylist and friend, Peter Kiran-Taylor in 1956, they developed the Lotus Elite. New in so many ways, but primarily  as a lighter-weight car, with  much  of the stressed chassis as fibreglass (GRP)  with  just a small amount of the load-bearing structure made of steel  to support  the famously spirited Coventry Climax engine. The Type II Elite Coupé proved a wonderfully agile driver's car, suitable for high-performance use on both road and track. The Bristol-bodied Elites were lighter and more robust than their Maximar predecessors and the Kiran-Taylor body form, fine-tuned by aerodynamicist Frank Costin, contributed to the car's low claimed drag coefficient of just 0.29.Although production finished for these cars in 1963, this example  was registered in 1965 and originally sold to a Mr. J. Cummings. It was the vendor who originally had an Elite in his youth and, despite a break where work and family took over, the hankering  for an Elite  never lost him.  A  very  competent trained engineer,  he eventually  found  a restoration project which, once purchased, was recovered back to Cornwall and stripped down. The bodywork was not too bad although the front subframe needed work. Indeed, a new one was obtained from Miles and Scott Bader followed by a Polyester powder coating and two coats of filler/primer and four coats of polyurethane acrylic finish applied to the entire car, including the engine bay and dash panel (although some attention would be required to now bring it back to showroom condition). The doors and windows have all been re-hung including all fixings and associated mechanisms. New front and rear screens and rubbers were also re-fitted as well as seals all the way round.Suspension units, front and rear, were also stripped and rebuilt with new bearings and bushes with 14 € wheels replaced with 15 € polished chrome wire wheels with 155x15 Firestone rubber all round. The brakes were completely rebuilt as expected with new callipers, pistons, seals, pads and hoses/pipework fitted to all four corners. After an oil pressure drop-off at 55,000 miles, the engine was stripped back and crank reground to -0.010 € with a new big-end and main shells. New cylinder liners were fitted with new piston rings as well as an adapter plate modified to take a conventional lip seal. A new timing chain has been installed with re-cut cylinder head-valve seats and re-ground inlet and exhaust valves.  The front and rear prop shaft universal joints have been re-built alongside a new crown wheel fitted with pinion bearings and half shaft bearings and differential mountings. A new clutch centre plate fitted with master and slave clutch cylinders was renewed in 1998 with a new diaphragm clutch cover fitted in 2002. According to the Elite World Register, based on the gearbox shift lever, it appears to have a MG Magnette gearbox, a not-unusual upgrade back in the 1960's, as are the twin Weber carburettors. The radiator has been flushed, tested and repainted with new hoses, thermostat and clips. A  new stainless-steel fuel tank is now fitted with all new stainless steel, armoured/braid PTFE fuel hoses running throughout. A completely new wiring loom is fitted with new solenoid, starter and dynamo brushes all replaced as necessary with all instruments checked. A new battery has been installed, complete with isolating switch. The exhaust system is now a stainless-steel unit with lugs bonded into the body. New silencers are now also fitted with replaced manifold studs. No expense has been spared with the interior as well;  all the seats and trim have been re-recovered, a new carpet set fitted,  plus  new high-specification, four- point seat belts fitted with reinforced mounting points. Underneath the seats, the slide mechanisms have been stripped and re-plated, the dash panel stripped and re-painted and the boot area re-trimmed and carpeted. The  car's comprehensive paperwork is extensive and is  provided in  a huge 64 litre plastic storage box. This includes a file of service parts, a Type 14 handbook, 'Lotus, the early years' by Peter Ross, a workshop manual file, a Lotus Club information file and 1974 register.  In addition, many Lotus Club magazines, two folders of Elite clippings and an extensive file relating to this car in particular. Finally, and interestingly, a boxed book entitled 'Lotus Elite, Racing Car for the Road' by Dennis Ortenburger. This is signed by the author on an actual 'chassis plate' inside the flyleaf alongside the actual chassis number, 1558.

Lot 805

Just one owner from new, number 13 of the 75 special edition, UK-only, 395bhp 'wolf in sheep’s clothing' cars culminating from the partnership of two automotive giants. Subaru is no stranger to a partnership. From their pairing with Prodrive - bringing their rally team to incredible success, translating to the fabulous Impreza P1 road car -  to Litchfield with their Type 25, and now more recently when they decided to hold hands with Cosworth to create the limited-edition CS400. The third generation, and somewhat controversial, hatchback Impreza was launched at the New York Motor Show in April 2007, but it wasn’t until 2010 that the CS400 came out. It was the fastest road-going Impreza ever offered in the UK with a recorded 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds, a standing quarter-mile in only 12.75 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph, only half-a-second slower to 60 than the mighty 572bhp Audi RS6.The CS400 featured a Cosworth-built engine with forged pistons, connecting rods and bearings, heavy-duty cylinder heads, uprated head gaskets and studs, a custom exhaust system and an uprated clutch and carbon synchros, resulting in an output of a very impressive 400bhp. From there, they turned their attention to the car's brakes and handling, fitting Eibach springs, specially-tuned Bilstein dampers all-round, improved chassis bushings, AP 355mm ventilated front brakes with six-piston calipers and lightweight Racing Dynamics Pro-Race 18" alloy wheels. Additional features included Zunsport mesh grilles, Xenon headlights and a leather interior with Cosworth-embroidered logos. The WRX STI Cosworth CS400, to give it its full title, was the result of one of the most eagerly anticipated automotive collaborations in recent times and was the first genuine Cosworth-developed road car since the Escorts of 1996. They offered spectacular performance combined with exclusivity as only 75 cars were built and the example offered here, lucky for some, #13 of those 75, is in lovely condition having been cherished by its single owner. Coming from the same vendor who presented the simply outstanding Twin-Sparks Collection in our Race Retro sale in February 2023, the CS400 was their ‘everyday car’ which benefits from a hugely impressive history file. Only three colours were available (Spark Silver, Dark Grey and San Remo Red) and number #13 is finished in Dark Grey. Within the history file is every MOT Certificate showing the car covered between 4-5,000 miles/year, and stacks upon stacks of invoices for servicing and maintenance, primarily from Perkins Subaru of Braintree Essex, and the CS400-specific service book. Without fail, the car has received servicing every year with any and all maintenance and work required being undertaken without a moment’s hesitation meaning this wonderful CS400 is as ready as ever for more B-Roads to be put in front of it.With Japanese manufacturers enjoying their time in the sun, this extremely limited, high performance CS400 is ready for any enthusiast or collector alike, safe in the knowledge it has been cared for and enjoyed by its single owner.SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: IMPREZA COSWORTH CS400 WRX STIYear: 2010Chassis Number: JF1GRFKH38G023982Registration Number: EO60 YCLTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 566708Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 55000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Grey/BlackClick here for more details and images

Lot 887

Exceptionally rare, 604bhp, V12 SL65 AMG Roadster offering 0-100mph in 7.5 seconds in supreme comfort.AMG, the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following worldwide. When the stunning SL55 AMG was introduced in 2003 with its 5.4-litre V8 producing 476bhp and a tree stump-pulling 520lbs/ft of torque it was naturally assumed it would remain top of the range, however AMG had a further party-trick. A year later the SL65 AMG arrived and was the new 'King of the Castle'.It retained the stylish looks and civilised manners of the rest of the range but was powered by a V12 leviathan capable of crushing the competition at a push of the accelerator. The twin-turbo, 6-litre engine delivers a remarkable 604bhp which is tamed through an intricate network of safety features and keep-you-alive electronics. At 740lbs/ft, the torque output is sufficient to keep you pinned in the immaculately stitched leather seats, in any gear at any time, whilst the 5-speed automatic transmission with manual capability provides a good level of control. Distinctive 19” dual-spoke AMG-signature alloys camouflage the eight-piston caliper performance brakes and the suspension has been subtly tweaked to deal with the general increase in numbers. Performance is documented at 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and 0-100mph in 7.5 seconds. All in all, a beautifully packaged amalgam of huge power, sumptuous comfort and a shop-window rattling V12 sound track. This stunning example is finished in Obsidian Black over black leather and black carpets and was ordered from new with a substantial list of options. According to the PDI report on file it was delivered new on 24th September 2009 to the 'Transport Department' at Mercedes-Benz UK and we understand that it was allocated to senior management. It was serviced in October 2010 by Mercedes Milton Keynes at 6,363 miles and was subsequently sold through Mercedes Salisbury in March 2012 to a Mr R Gibbs who owned the car until it was purchased via Rob Hall of Bourne, Lincolnshire by our lady vendor's deceased husband in July 2020. Sadly he passed away in October 2020 and the Mercedes has been in storage since.Recent new batteries have been fitted, and it will be freshly MOT'd by the time of our sale. It's accompanied by its original handbooks, manuals etc. in the original leather Mercedes folder, a digital service report on file detailing nine services, some older MOTs and its UK V5C.This exceptionally rare SL65 AMG Roadster variant has covered just 34,506 miles, remains in excellent condition and seems very sensibly guided when you consider the performance, rarity and sheer quality on offer.      SpecificationMake: MERCEDESModel: SL65 AMGYear: 2009Chassis Number: WDB2304792F160169Registration Number: KN59 TNFTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 27598160008072 Make: Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 883

The collaboration of two industry Titans has resulted in this very special, one of 75 UK-only, limited-edition 395bhp, WRX STi Cosworth CS400.The third-generation Subaru Impreza was launched at the New York Motor Show in April 2007 followed almost three years later by the infamous, limited-edition CS400. The performance of the CS400 was 'headline-grabbing' and it was the fastest road-going model ever offered in the UK with a recorded 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds, a standing quarter-mile in only 12.75 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph, only half a second slower to 60 than the mighty 572bhp Audi RS6.The CS400 featured a Cosworth-built engine with forged pistons, connecting rods and bearings, heavy-duty cylinder heads, uprated head gaskets and studs, a custom exhaust system and an uprated clutch and carbon synchros, resulting in an output of a very impressive 400bhp. They offered spectacular performance combined with exclusivity as only 75 cars were built and the example offered here, number 30 of those 75, is in amazing condition having covered just 12,296 patently cossetted miles. Only three colours were available (Spark Silver, Dark Grey and San Remo Red) and number 30 is finished in Dark Grey, a rather muted hue for a 400bhp Impreza, but pleasingly matches the colour in the original sales brochure in the history file. Also in the file are all the MOT Certificates and the CS400-specific service book which displays nine stamps. The car remains in virtually 'as new' condition, with the interior looking showroom-fresh with plenty of Cosworth branding, the original protective film on the centre console, a set of unused Cosworth mats and even the Cosworth-embossed callipers look brand new, without having experienced a full heat-cycle.Silverstone Auctions have a record of achieving special prices for rare Imprezas and this true 'collectors quality' example, with its low-mileage and immaculate condition, surely looks irresistible at this guide. SpecificationMake: SUBARUModel: IMPREZAYear: 2010Chassis Number: JF1GRFKH38G024034Registration Number: DG60 JAUTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 577095 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 12100 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

1909 Ford Model T Touring Engine no. 7318177ci Flathead Inline 4-Cylinder EngineSingle CarburetorApprox. 22hp at 1,600rpm2-Speed Planetary Manual Transmission Transverse Leaf Springs and Solid Axles Front and Rear Rear-Wheel Drum Brakes*Desirable early Ford Model T Touring *Formerly owned in California *A nearly completed sympathetic restoration*Lots of potential for an enthusiast to finish offTHE EARLY MODEL THenry Ford was thrown out of the Henry Ford Company for pursuing an idea which his investors thought was silly: building an inexpensive, reliable, four-passenger automobile. The directors – men of substance, prosperity and achievement – knew that the automobile was accessible only to them and their counterparts. Henry was a dreamer, and after backing his early ideas they cut their losses, sending Mr. Ford packing with a $900 gratuity and a roll of blueprints for a simple, cheap car that had – in their experienced judgment – no chance of success.Surprisingly, Henry found a new backer in Alexander Malcolmson, a Detroit coal merchant, and the canny Henry managed to keep Malcolmson on board until Ford's vision was ready to be realized. It was called the Model T (T is the 20th letter of the alphabet and Henry had rendered many of the preceding nineteen letters in metal which alone is sufficient to substantiate the abundance of his ideas.) The early Model Ts were beautiful automobiles. They had acres of brightwork, were finished in brilliant colors and had elaborately-shaped bodies that owed little to production economies and much to the styles and public expectations of the day. Their 177 cubic inch four-cylinder engines had removable cylinder heads (revolutionary in the day but which made it practical for owners to clean their valves and piston crowns of the carbon buildup which the poor breathing, slow combustion and crummy fuels of the day made a regular chore of automobile ownership.)In the early years Ford's production was challenged by other marques. Buick, for example, outsold Ford even though it was more expensive. But soon Ford's single-minded focus on reducing costs and combining great value with low price achieved the results that economists (had there been any in 1910) would have predicted.THE MOTORCAR OFFEREDThe '09 T here displays all those subtleties of the early cars, even the top mountings are built on an ornate bar that stretches back around the whole rear of the body. It is little details like this that quickly were lost in the quest for uniformity and profit. Acquired from Peter Eastwood in Pasadena, California in the early 2000s, the car presents as a near complete restoration of a highly original example. Detail features such as original front floorboards and car builder patent plaque are still present and it is evident that the bodywork is built in wood rather than metal for most of the structure. Viewed carefully there remain details that need finishing, there are no manifolds and while painted, the condition of the engine is not clear. The dash is missing a coil box, coils and wiring also, most of these cars would have had a windshield too. But one of the benefits of the remarkable survival rates of the T is that there are a host of other minds to consult with on making sure that the right pieces are sourced and further many different supporting entities and suppliers of parts who can assist. The Ford is finished in bright red with black fenders, chassis and undercarriage and has black wood spoke wheels, the basic bodywork is accented with brass Edmunds & Jones headlights, brass radiator shell and sidelights. A much more exclusive, distinctive and attractive automobile than later Model Ts would be, when completed, it will provide its new owner that a very rare commodity indeed which carries rarified status among their community.
