Ticking. Sold with a 19th century winding key. The frame 21cms (8.25ins) high. Height to the top of the glass cover 34cms (13.5ins). Footnotes:The silvered presentation plaque reads:PRESENTED TOJOHN CONDIE ESQUIRE,BY THE WORKMEN EMPLOYED AT WILSONTOWN IRON WORKSOn hisleaving the Management of these Works As a small mark of their regard for himas a Kind and Just Master,And of their estimation of his Valuable ACQUIREMENTS IN SCIENCEand especially his IMPROVEMENTS IN IRON MAKING October 1839John Condie was born in the Gorbals, Glasgow on the south bank of the Clyde in 1799. Like many local men, his life revolved around the iron making trade, and he soon joined the Wilsontown Iron Works near Forth, south east of the city. It was here that James Beaumont Neilson (1792-1865) developed a new blast furnace, but it was Condie's invention of the Spiral Tuyere in 1836 that enabled raw coal from the adjacent mines to be used in the process, rather than the far more expensive coke. It was during this time of innovation and expansion that this clock was presented to Condie by his workmen. With the closure of the Wilsontown Works in 1842 (which at one time had employed two thousand men), Condie moved to the Govan Iron Works at Hutchesontown, not far from the Gorbals. It was here in 1846 that he patented a steam hammer with a fixed piston and a moving cylinder which carried the hammer at its base. The first example was erected in the Govan works in 1848. Condie went on to produce a number of these gargantuan steam hammers, each with up to as much as a seven ton force, for several forges around Scotland. Condie handed over the Govan works to Allan C. Wylie before his death in Wellcroft Place in his home city of Glasgow at the age of sixty-one in 1860.Reading the presentation inscription on this clock, one is left in no doubt that not only was Condie a man of huge talent and vision but was also a man of great humanity. The esteem in which he was held by his workforce exudes from every line. The clock was given relatively early on in his career and it is pleasing to consider that this timepiece was witness to such a fertile mind, one that certainly changed the fortunes of Glasgow, and improved the processes of iron manufacturing at a time when Britain was considered 'the workshop of the world.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1964 Velocette 192cc LE MkIIIRegistration no. DGU 697BFrame no. 6698/3Engine no. 6698/34Launched in 1948, as the 'motorcycle for everyman', the Velocette LE addressed the criticisms most often levelled at motorcycles: that they were noisy, dirty and needed special clothing to ride; achieving impressive levels of silence, comfort, and practicality. This LE is an example of the MkIII which was introduced for 1959, its principal improvement being a four-speed, foot-change gearbox with kick-starter. In addition, the speedometer, ammeter and light switch were moved from the leg shield to the headlamp shell. 'DGU 697B' was supplied to Oxfordshire Constabulary via Kings of Oxford and Leytons (see Dennis Frost letters on file). Owned for 30 years and currently taxed, the LE sounds good when running and is presented in 'oily rag' condition. The private vendor advises us that the oil has been changed every 500 miles and that the following components have been replaced: top gear on the gearbox main shaft and lay shaft; gearbox bearings and oil seals; and piston rings and valves. Although the aforementioned works were carried out circa 30 years ago, the machine is said never to have smoked since. Velo-8M electronic ignition was fitted in 2020. Accompanying paperwork includes expired MoTs; a V5C Registration Certificate; and invoices for a new exhaust and silencers (stainless).Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 512

1983 Moto Morini 500 Sei-VRegistration no. XGX 365YFrame no. 500-W 05601Engine no. 05601Before the introduction of its v-twin roadsters, Morini's reputation had rested on its highly successful double-overhead-cam single-cylinder racers. An entirely different approach was adopted for the v-twins: each cylinder's two valves were pushrod-operated by a single camshaft while the combustion chambers were located in the piston crowns. Enhanced by a six-speed gearbox, this superb motor's performance belied its lack of capacity, endowing the lightweight, nimble-footed Morini '3½' (350cc) with a top speed of around 100mph. A '500' (actually 478.6cc) version was announced in 1975 with production commencing a couple of years later in five-speed form, a six-speed version superseding it for 1982. The 500's top speed was only marginally superior to the 3½'s, the biggest gain from the larger engine being greater flexibility. This Sei-V (six-speed) model was purchased new from Roger Hollingshead Motorcycles by the current owner and has covered 48,028 miles from new. The original bill of sale is on file and the machine also comes with its original handbook; parts book and maintenance book; Mikuni carburettor instructions; V5/V5C documents; and all bills, MoTs, and tax discs dating back to its purchase. Sounding great when running, and taxed/MoT'd to July 2021, 'XGX 365Y' has been maintained regardless of cost and was last serviced in July 2019. The seat has been re-covered and the starter motor rebuilt, while other noteworthy features include Nonfango panniers, an Armour stainless exhaust system, and the original tool kit.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2000 Harley-Davidson XLH 1200S SportRegistration no. X923 RJCFrame no. 1HD1CHP18YK128669Engine no. to be advisedA new addition to Harley-Davidson's XL ever-popular Sportster line-up for 1996, the 1200S Sport featured triple floating disc brakes; fully adjustable suspension front and rear; 13-spoke alloy wheels; 'flat-track' handlebars; and a two-position seat. All Sportsters received a larger 3.3-gallon tank for 1997, while for the following year the 1200S was upgraded with twin-plug cylinder heads; a higher compression ratio; 'hotter' camshafts; and soft-compound tyres. There were additional performance enhancing changes made to the 1200S engine for 1999, while 4-piston callipers were adopted for the triple disc brakes and a black-finished exhaust system introduced for 2000. A rev counter; remote-reservoir gas shocks; and a five-speed gearbox were also standard features. A Harley wouldn't be a Harley without some tasty after-market additions, and this 1200S Sport features a Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle exhaust system; a Screaming Eagle free-flow air filter; an oil cooler; a Stage 1 tune (larger carburettor jets); a bobbed rear mudguard; and a H-D 'Badlander' custom seat (the original 'King & Queen' seat is included in the sale). The Sport currently displays a total of only 21,366 miles on the odometer and is described by the private vendor as in excellent condition throughout. Last MoT'd to May 2016 and SORN'd since then, the Harley has been run regularly and is said to be 'ready to go'.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 622

1961 BMW 594cc R60/2 & Steib S501 Motorcycle CombinationRegistration no. 679 PKJFrame no. 622668Engine no. 622668At the end of 1954, BMW dropped its existing trio of horizontally opposed twins (the R51/3, R67/2 and R68), replacing them with the R50 and R69. The engines were little altered, significant changes being concentrated on the frame and cycle parts, which now featured an Earles-type leading-link front fork and swinging-arm rear suspension. The R67/2, a lower-compression model much favoured by sidecarists, was not replaced until the arrival for 1956 of the R60, which used a low-compression version of the R69 engine. The sidecar market remained an important one for BMW, and the new fork's bottom link incorporated alternative mounting points giving suitable trail should a 'chair' be attached. In 1960 the flat-twins range was revised as the '/2', most of the changes being inside the engine, which received a strengthened crankcase and crankshaft, hard-chromed piston rings, improved internal ventilation, new cam followers, and a stronger clutch assembly. The R60/2's compression ratio went up from 6.5:1 to 7.5:1, boosting peak power to 30PS (29.6hp SAE). This classic BMW/Steib motorcycle combination was in one single family ownership from 1964 until purchased by the vendor in October 2009 and was last taxed for the road in 2012. The outfit is nicely presented and should require only minimal re-commissioning before further use. This superb example of Teutonic engineering is offered with marque-related literature; a Clymer manual; its original old-style logbook; some expired MoTs; and a V5C document.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 655

The ex-John Pearson 1969 Bultaco 125cc TSS Grand Prix Racing MotorcycleFrame no. B-600621Engine no. 600621-6•Regular Isle of Man TT competitor (1969-1973)•10th place in the 1971 IoM Lightweight 125 TT•Rebuilt to in-period specificationSpurred on by the successes achieved by tuned versions of its first model, the Tralla 101, Bultaco went one stage further and developed its first purpose-built racing motorcycle: the legendary TSS, 125cc prototypes of which began testing in 1960. About as simple as a racing motorcycle can get, the air-cooled two-stroke single developed 20bhp initially, which proved sufficient to win races at national level worldwide and compete without embarrassment in Grands Prix, provided the rider had enough talent. It was demonstrably the best 125 that privateers could buy at the time. Self-generating electronic ignition, a six-speed gearbox, and water-cooling were the most significant advances, the latter arriving on customer bikes for 1965. Geared primary drive came later.Among the first racers to campaign the Spanish two-strokes in the UK were Tommy Robb and Dan Shorey, the latter taking the coveted ACU Star (British Championship) in the 125cc class in 1961. Armed with a 196cc TSS, Shorey enjoyed a phenomenal run of success in the 1962 250cc World Championship, twice finishing 4th behind a trio of works Hondas to end the year in 7th place overall. He also took the British 125cc and 250cc Championships that same year. This water-cooled (believed six-speed) Bultaco 125cc TSS M40 comes with extensive Isle of Man TT history. The Bultaco was purchased new in 1969 from Bill Smith Motors by John Pearson and its first race in 1969 was the Isle of Man Lightweight 125 TT, coming home in 13th place at an average speed of 76.68mph in an event won by Kawasaki-mounted Dave Simmonds. The Pearson/TSS combination would go on to compete in every Isle of Man TT until 1973 and is the last ever Bultaco to finish in the Lightweight TT. Pearson's best result in the Lightweight 125 TT was in 1971 when he brought the TSS home in a very impressive 10th place to gain one World Championship point. The Bultaco's only non-finish in five TTs was in 1970. This matching-numbers machine has now been fully restored to its early 1970s specification and last ran earlier this year. The engine has been fully rebuilt (big-end, re-bore, piston, seals and gaskets); the radiator re-cored; and a new exhaust pipe obtained from the factory. A long-distance fuel tank and Fahron front brake (as used in period) are the only notified deviations from factory specification. Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 665

The ex-Lovejoy 1960 BSA 646cc A10 & Watsonian Squire SidecarRegistration no. 322 BXUFrame no. GA7 17926Engine no. DA10 6769•As featured in hit BBC TV comedy drama Lovejoy•Ridden by Lovejoy's assistant Eric•Restored around 10 years agoThis BSA sidecar outfit will be familiar to fans of the 1980s/1990s BBC TV comedy drama Lovejoy, featuring the eponymous antique dealer (played by Ian McShane) and his friends, associates, and adversaries. Only seen in Series 1, the BSA was ridden by Lovejoy's assistant Eric, played by Chris Jury, and was attached to a Watsonian Squire chassis complete with box sidecar. The combination has been owned by the vendor for approximately 16 years and was restored around ten years ago so is still in very good condition, though not immaculate. The machine has been used very little in recent years, hence the mileage of 562. Started recently though not run on the road, it would benefit from a service and re-commissioning. Much work was done by renowned marque specialists SRM Engineering: crankshaft re-ground; cylinders glaze-busted; new piston rings fitted; and new unleaded-compatible valves and valve seats installed. In addition, the frame was stove enamelled; the magneto and speedometer overhauled; a new wiring loom installed; new shock absorbers fitted; and most of the original chrome re-plated. The tank is new (original available). Borrani alloy wheel rims and a twin-leading-shoe front brake are the only notified deviations from factory specification. A full list of all works carried out is available and the machine also comes with sundry restoration bills and a V5C document.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

This is The Jet Hunters Edition number 65 / 150 published in 2011 complete with matching number companion print Black November Day and supplied with the original Certificate of Authenticity. The print has the original signature of Wayne Gatlin alongside some of the Luftwaffe's most famous exponents of the Me262 jet fighter, also signed by an impressive number of WW2's most experienced allied fighter pilots, all of whom had victories against the jets of the Luftwaffe making a total of 20 signatures. The main print is signed by the artist Robert Taylor and Major General Wayne C. Gatlin, Squadron Leader Jurek Mencel DFC KM*** AFM***, Colonel Joe Peterburs, Captain Wayne Coleman, Lieutenant Colonel Huie H. Lamb, Colonel Donald Cummings, Colonel Art Jeffrey, Major General Edward Giller, Captain Clayton Gross, Lieutenant Colonel Donald S Bryan, Captain John Fitch, First Lieutenant Stephen Ananian, Major Urban Drew and Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Delgado. The main print measures approximately 34.5 x 24.5 inches and the companion print measures approximately 25.5 x 16.5 inches. The mark is very light and is virtually invisible when looking at the print. Please see photographs. Print historical detail : On 10 April 1945 thirteen hundred bombers of the Mighty Eighth set out to destroy the last of the Luftwaffe's jet force. But, unknown to the bomber crews and their fighter escort, the enemy jets were already airborne and waiting to spring their deadly trap. As the war in mainland Europe entered its final, bloody phase, the German Armies defending Berlin fought on with a savage determination, slowly disintegrating before the mighty weapon of war unleashed against them. What remained of the Luftwaffe was mercilessly pounded from the air, their airfields hammered relentlessly. Aircraft, fuel, spare parts, ammunition and pilots all in short supply but still they fought on, with deadly effect. At the forefront of the German offensive and pivotal during the defence of the Reich, were the highly advanced jet fighters of the Luftwaffe, and in particular the legendary Me262. The scene portrays B17s of the First Air Division with streaming contrails in the cold clear air as they turn for home. Several Me262s have already torn through the massed formation. but a P-51 from the escorting 356th Fighter Group has quickly spotted his target and presses home his attack. The hunter becomes the hunted as the Mustang pilot, Wayne Gatlin, skilfully positions himself behind the Me262 ready for the kill. Throughout the final stages of the war there were many examples of the determination and skill of Allied pilots flying slower piston-engined fighters triumphing over the cream of the Luftwaffe in their highly advanced but often temperamental jet fighters. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99. This print can be sent tubed or flat packed any additional shipping is charged at cost.

Pim (James) The Atmospheric Railway. A Letter to the Right Hon. the Earl of Ripon..., 4 folding lithographed plates, modern cloth, privately printed, 1841 § Mallet (Robert) Three reports upon Improved Methods of Constructing and Working Atmospheric Railways, first edition, 10 engraved plates, 8 double-page, foxed, contemporary half roan, rubbed, [1845] § Jouffroy (A., Marquis de) Chemins de Fer- Système Jouffroy. Quelsques Mots...sur le Chemin de Fer Atmosphérique, first edition, modern half dark maroon morocco, g.e, spine faded, with original pictorial green wrappers bound in, Paris, 1844, 8vo & 4to (3)⁂ Clegg and Samuda's patented atmospheric railway ran on a section of line at Wormwood Scrubs, using a fixed airtight tube and a piston attached to the car. It made many journeys and successfully ran up an incline of 1/100, returning on the track by gravity. The system was cheaper to build and had many advantages over locomotive power, being used in the Dalkey to Kingstown line where it achieved in one run a speed of about 60mph. The Irish line ran from 1843 for over 10 years. It was the first commercial line of its type.Robert Mallet was an Irish civil engineer, not to be confused with Charles François Mallet who had been sent by the French Government to report on the Dublin Dalkey atmospheric railway and who also issued a report. Robert Mallet came into dispute with the Samudas, builders of the Dalkey line, over patent issues, which are referred to here. He later built the Fastnet Rock lighthouse. The Marquis Achille de Jouffroy proposed a rail system with a central cog arrangement, it was reviewed favourably in the Railway journal of 1844.

1975 Ossa MAR, 244 cc. Registration number JCE 57N. Frame number B222922. Engine number M222922. In a bid to emulate the competition successes of rivals Bultaco and Montesa, Ossa hired English trials star Mick Andrews in 1967. Then only 23 but already a proven winner, Andrews set about developing Ossa's existing trail bike into a competitive trials mount, Andrews became the Monarch of the Glens in the 1970 Scottish, a process that culminated in the MAR - Mick Andrews Replica - that carried its creator to consecutive European Trials Championships in 1971 and '72. The MAR put Ossa on the trials map with a vengeance and proved so successful that it remained in production until the late 1970s. This UK bike was first registered in June 1975 and it was used by a marshal at various events to get himself in position (see decals on the body). By 1982 it was with father and son, Brian and Peter Moore of Cambridge, they rebuilt the engine with new piston rings. Followed by a more comprehensive restoration in 1988, there is an MOT on file for 1,320 miles in 1993. Our vendor bought it in 2007 and stored it in a dry garage. Recently recommissioned it would be advisable for the next custodian to undertake their own safety checks before entering this competitive machine into competition. Sold with the V5, old MOT, various receipts, workshop manual and brochure.

Lot 1138

1968 BSA Bantam D14/4 175cc. Registration number SWD 572G. Frame number PC12211D14B. Engine number PC12211 D14B. The introduction of the 172cc D10 model in 1966 marked a number of important technical developments for the ever-popular Bantam, the most important of which were a change to coil ignition, replacing the old flywheel generator, and the adoption of a four-speed gearbox, while a raised compression ratio and bigger carburettor increased maximum power to 10bhp and the top speed to 62mph. Introduced for 1968, the successor D14 Bantam boasted a more powerful engine producing 12.6bhp. All three models ? Supreme, Sports and Bushman ? used the four-speed gearbox first seen on the preceding D10 while the latter pair boasted new, heavy-duty front forks. SWD was first registered on the 9th December 1968 and by 1988 was with Derek Jobling of Brough. Tax discs go back to 1997 and MOT history starts in 2008 at 18,381 miles, over the years this rises to todays 24,268 miles. Our vendor states that SWD has benefited from a full restoration after being purchased in a very poor state of repair in 1997. The bike has many stainless steel imperial fastners and 12 volt electrics with a Triumph type encapsulated stator. A centre plug cylinder head is fitted and the crank has been repaired with a Suzuki piston fitted. There are numerous new parts including the silencer, front rim, stainless spokes, clutch basket, Yuasa battery and rear units. Wiring for indicators is present but not connected to the indicator units, but these accompany the machine along with a rack. This machine could be soon recommissioned for road use with a safety check. Sold with V5C, V5, previous MOT?s and tax discs.

Lot 1158

1957 BSA Gold Star CB 32, 350cc. Registration number 343 UYK (non transferrable). Frame number CB32 508. Engine number BB32 GS 1026 In 1937, a specially prepared Empire Star 500 ridden by the great Wal Handley achieved a 100mph lap of the Brooklands track on its way to a debut race victory and an award of the Gold Star that would give BSA's new super sports model its evocative name. Possibly the most successful production four-stroke single racing motorcycle ever, the post-war Gold Star formed the mainstay of clubman's racing in the 1950s. In fact, it was the model's domination of the Isle of Man Clubman's TT which led to the event being dropped after Gold Star rider Bernard Codd's 1956 Senior/Junior double victory. Post-WW2, the Gold Star did not return to the BSA range until 1949. First displayed at the Earls Court Show in 1948, the B32 350cc Goldie boasted the telescopic front fork first introduced on BSAs larger models for 1946 and came equipped with a new alloy cylinder barrel and cylinder head. For 1950 a 500cc version ? the B34 ? was added to the range, and this larger Goldie was the first to switch to the new die-cast top-end, with separate rocker box, in 1951. The 350 followed suit in 1952 and the pair continued as the "BB'" Gold Stars after the new swinging arm frame was introduced in 1953. UYK was issued with an age related registration in February 2015 supported by a dating certificate from North Leicester Motorcycles. Both the frame and engine numbers coming from that years numbers. In the 1970?s/80?s the bike was raced by Mr Ashley Brooks of Lincolnshire, but no other history is known for the bike. A period one sided 8? front brake is fitted and the forks benefit from a Taylordow Superleggera top yoke and double damping rods. The engine has a new big end, mains, 10:1 compression piston and MK1 Amal Concentric carb, all mated to a believed reconditioned RRT2 close ratio gearbox. Sold with V5C and dating certificate.
