1932 BSA 349cc L32-2/Blue Star Special (see text) Registration no. JF 3591Frame no. Z3.616Engine no. Z11.1153 (see text)This sporty lightweight BSA special left the factory as a model L32-2 weighing just 224lbs. A photo of the bike in 1992 when acquired by the previous owner shows that the ohv engine had already replaced the original side valve unit by that time. The combination of light cycle parts and a pokey engine make the bike both quick and agile. The crankcases and high compression piston are top of the range Blue Star items, we are told that the flywheels and cams are also Blue Star, the ohv head has a single port. Throughout the vendor's twenty year ownership the BSA has been meticulously maintained: in 2004 a hairline crack in the left hand crankcase was welded up, and has been secure ever since, the brakes have been re-lined, clutch plates replaced, chains are reported as excellent, but the battery may need replacing. It was last ridden earlier this year. It is accompanied by a V5C, continuation buff log book, a large selection of spares (please refer to website photos) including the original crankcases, invoices dating back to 1992, restoration photos, an original instruction book, copy parts book, MoTs and a selection of tax discs going back to 1937. Prospective bidders should satisfy themselves as to the motorcycle's completeness and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1950 Vincent 499cc CometRegistration no. LKH 109Frame no. Upper Frame no.RC/1/5966 Rear Frame no. RC/1/5966 Engine no. Engine no. F5AB/2A/4066 Crankcase nos.93H/93H• Matching numbers example• Well maintained, with some modern updatesWith the apocryphal tale of Vincent-HRD Series A twins being conceived as a result of two single-cylinder drawings being overlapped, it could be said that the post-war single cylinder engine was brought about by the use of a rubber – removing the rear cylinder of the existing twin-pot design. In other respects, the layout was almost identical, with the same 'frameless' cycle parts being employed for both types. On the singles, the rear cylinder was replaced with a cast alloy beam, and the gearbox employed was the familiar Burman item, an older versions of which had been popular before the war. Announced in late 1948, a few Series B Meteors were produced before being joined by the Comet in Series C form with Girdraulic forks, as opposed to the Brampton girders on the Meteor. The Comet was a little more expensive, being equipped with the new forks, a higher compression ratio, front propstands, and a modified, slightly longer, rear frame section. In most other respects the bikes were very similar. It remained in the model range from its inception in 1948 until 1954.This matching numbers Comet was purchased by the vendor in 2004. The previous owner, Neil Cowan, had acquired the machine in 1994 from a garage in Dundee, and used the machine for a few rallies and shows before realising that it required some work. He gave the machine to Simon Linford who carried out work mainly to refurbish the front forks, dampers and electrics, whilst the engine was sent to Bob Dunn for a complete rebuild (invoice on file). Later work included fitting an Alton generator and regulator. Registered in Hull, the factory records do not relate to whom LKH 109 was first consigned (possibly Jordans of Hull), but there is a copy of the Works Order form and a VOC certificate of Authenticity in the documents. It retains its original upper frame, rear frame and engine. The present owner has used the Comet every year during his ownership, for club runs and local rallies, and continued to improve the machine, adding stainless steel wheel rims and spokes, a centre stand, folding rider's footrests, barrel relined with standard piston, new valves and guides, new multiplate clutch, new carburettor, anti-sumping valve, and a 105 camshaft (original cam included). Unfortunately, the vendor has reached an age at which he feels he may be unable to use the bike as much as he would like, and wishes to pass it on to another custodian to enjoy. With the battery reconnected, it will be ready for a new owner to use. Documentation comprises a current V5C, copy old V5s, a quantity of old tax discs, the aforementioned copy Works Order Form, invoices / receipts, and sundry papers.Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 556

1959 Nor-Vin 499cc CometRegistration no. WNM 52Frame no. 14P 81340Engine no. F5AB/2A/4807It is often said that the measure of a special's quality is whether it could pass for a factory-built machine, and this stunning Nor-Vin certainly fits the bill, looking like it could easily have originated in either Bracebridge Street or Stevenage. Indeed, the vast quantity of bills in the accompanying documents file testifies to the fact that this was a no-expense-spared project. Built by the enthusiast vendor (an experienced restorer with over 40 years of show-standard bikes to his credit), the machine consists of a 1959 Model 99 frame and a 1950 Comet engine. The latter has been overhauled with a new cylinder, piston and bearings, and the head rebuilt by Conway Motors. The gearbox internals are said to be 'nearly as new' and the clutch in very good condition. The dynamo and magneto have been rebuilt and the electrics renewed, while the primary and final drive chains are new. On the cycle parts side, the forks have been fully rebuilt with new stanchions and bushes, and the wheels rebuilt with new bearings, stainless spokes and the original Dunlop rims (re-chromed). The Norton Commando TLS front brake is a sensible upgrade. Needless to say, all the paintwork is new. Finished in 2021, this unique Nor-Vin may need some carburettor tuning but otherwise is ready to enjoy, offered with V5C. Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1966 Triumph 350cc Tiger 90 Police MotorcycleRegistration no. LWO 754EFrame no. T90P H51692Engine no. T90P H51692This Tiger 90 was built on the 28th October 1966 as part of a batch of 51 police models. It was dispatched to R J Ware & Sons of Newport, Monmouthshire on the 31st March 1967, destined for service with Newport Borough Constabulary. The Triumph was initially based at the police house in Llangybi in the Usk area and used by the local officer, PC Len Davies. In 1972 'LWO 754E' was disposed of by Newport Borough Constabulary as they were moving to 650cc machines. The bike remained in storage until the vendor (a serving police officer) bought it in 2017 as a long-term restoration project. The engine has had a full rebuild with only the piston rings and clutch roller bearings replaced; it is running on standard pistons so has never been re-bored. The frame has been stripped down to bare metal and refinished with paints of original specification, and as many of the original parts as possible were reused in the refurbishment. A Boyer Bransden Power Box and electronic ignition have been fitted (original diode and rectifier included). The Tiger's restoration was completed earlier this year and all the related bills and photographs come with the machine. Last run in March 2022, the Tiger is offered with a VMCC dating certificate and a V5C document. Keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1994 Laverda 668cc 650 SportRegistration no. HMN 769F (IoM)Frame no. LAV650 ZLV650SP 100001097Engine no. 1097Having established its performance credentials with a succession of big three-cylinder sports bikes during the 1970s, most notably the fire-breathing Jota, Laverda emerged from a succession of financial upheavals with a new range for the 1990s. The first of these was the 650 Sport, which used a 668cc development of the old Alpino '500' 8-valve twin-cylinder engine housed in a state-of-the-art aluminium twin-spar chassis designed by frame and suspension guru, Nico Bakker. Sadly, Laverda's new owners Gruppo Zanini collapsed in 1992 after only a handful of machines had been assembled, leaving the new owners to build the first production 650 Sports using Zanini's component stocks. These early examples, which feature White Power suspension, are generally considered of better quality than those built subsequently, which tended to suffer from cylinder head and piston problems. This early White Power-equipped 650 Sport was first registered on 9th November 1994 as 'M151 JPJ', and was first registered in the Isle of Man on 1st November 2005. The current owner purchased the Laverda at Bonhams' sale of the Robert White Collection in September 2016 (Lot 605), since when it has been kept as part of their extensive private collection within a climate-controlled environment. Believed last run in 2010, the machine will require re-commissioning before returning to the road. Accompanying paperwork includes an owner's manual, a workshop manual, and an Isle of Man Vehicle Registration Certificate. The machine is Datatagged. 1958 Greeves ‘Scottish’ 20TAReg. no. LSV 161Frame no. 8062 TAEngine no. 373B 390The Greeves Trials bike was easily identified with its die-cast alloy frame Moorland Blue paintwork and the rubber in torsion leading link front forks. In 1958 after extensive modifications to the frame and using the Villiers 197cc 9E Sports engine, the 20TA was first put on sale to the public and was named the ‘Scottish’ after factory rider Jack Simpson’s victory in the 1957 Scottish Six Day Trial’s 200cc category. The Greeves Scottish 20TA Frame number 8062TA offered here was dispatched from the factory on the 30/11/57 to the dealer/agent R. H. King of Bedford. The engine number at that time was 723B 3617 and in the ‘Extras Column’ of the dispatch record for this bike it states, ‘Tuned engine 1st off line’. The fuel tank colour is correct according to the Greeves Bible by Colin Sparrow. The current 9E engine has a 31A top end, a modern piston in a re-bored barrel and is fitted with a primary chain tensioner and Electrex ignition. The current owner says the bike is very reliable and starts easily but he has unfortunately not been able to use it for its intended purpose so has decided to sell it.Comes with – a current V5C, a Greeves Riders Association factory records information letter, a Villiers Spare Parts booklet, a Greeves Instruction and Service Book, an Electronic Ignition Instructions booklet and some old MOTs and tax discs.

Lot 927

WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Air Commodore, inventor and engineer, credited with the invention of the turbojet engine which culminated in the first British jet-engined aircraft, the Gloster E.28/39, flying on 15th May 1941. An historically important document prepared by Whittle, unsigned, although with a few corrections in his hand, titled Report on First Tests of an Experimental Gas Turbine by Squadron-Leader F. Whittle, R.A.F., marked 'Confidential', and one of five copies, being the first confidential report delivered to the Air Ministry by Power Jets Ltd. 'in fulfilment of Item No.1 of Research Contract', thirty-six pages, folio, with three fold-out appendices at the conclusion, n.p., 31st March 1938. The typescript (carbon copy) report describes, in detail, the initial tests of a constant pressure gas turbine intended for aircraft propulsion by jet reaction and the experiments carried out under Whittle's supervision between April and August 1937, the introduction stating, in part, 'At the time when the development of the propulsion unit was under consideration, there was no intention of making a complete engine at once, partly because definite ideas as to its final form were rather nebulous, but mainly because a sufficient knowledge of the performance of the different components for design purposes was lacking. It was therefore intended to adopt a step by step process, commencing with tests on a high speed single stage centrifugal compressor. It was decided that this should be of the size to be used in the engine…..because it was believed that to make tests on a smaller scale would lead to misleading results' and the document continuing with reports on Design and Construction (including the strength of the materials when exposed to high temperature, the rotor assembly, the 'very unorthodox feature' of the turbine nozzle, etc.), the results of Preliminary Combustion Tests ('These tests at least proved that the required combustion rates could be obtained, though for various reasons, they did not provide sufficient information for the avoidance of combustion trouble in the engine itself……Ignition of the atomising sprays by high tension spark proved to be easy at moderate air speeds, but as the electrodes were damaged early in the tests, ignition was mainly achieved by the insertion of burning oily waste through a flap……The quality of combustion was judged by the appearance of the flame, the presence or otherwise of visible smoke or fuel vapour, and the smell and the effect on the eyes of the exhaust'), Tests with Atomising Sprays, Plain Sprays ('The flame was very intense, and for the speed, the combustion was the best that had been achieved up to that time. It appeared, however, that the system was very sensitive to jet alignment, and this was largely true of all similar systems tried'), Testing Arrangements ('For test purposes, the unit was mounted on a four wheeled trailer. This trailer also carried the starter motor, instrument board and controls, making the set self-contained with the exception of the fuel and water supply….For starting, it was considered to be necessary to spin the rotor up to about 3000 r.p.m. after which it was expected to be capable of accelerating under its own power…..The instruments and their connections were considerably modified in the course of the tests. Pressure gauges were connected to six points on the compressor casing…..The tachometer was mounted on the top of the gear case in such a position that it could be seen through a hole in the instrument board'), further providing a description of the test runs of the unit, subdivided into four categories, in part, 'For the test runs, the starting procedure was as follows:- The rotor was motored over at about 1000 r.p.m. and the pilot jet ignited by the hand magneto. The speed was then raised to 2000 r.p.m., at which speed the main jet was opened and the unit accelerated under its own power…..No trouble was ever experienced in starting other than occasional trouble with the initial ignition through cracked electrodes, and in fact the very first attempt to start was successful……Five runs were made with this system, the maximum speed reached being 8,500 r.p.m. beyond which the unit would not accelerate on further opening of the control…..Of these five runs, uncontrolled acceleration occurred in one case, otherwise it was found possible to hold the unit at a steady speed with the control', also giving a discussion of the results and Whittle's conclusions. A document of exceptional content and major significance in Whittle's development of the jet engine, the historical importance of which cannot be overstated, the jet engine being one of the most important of the 20th century, affecting the life of almost very human being. Loosely bound in the original plain paper wrappers, with a typed title to the cover, and all of the pages with two files holes to the left edges. Some very light, minor overall age wear and some light staining and a few minor tears to the edges of the paper covers, about VG The invention of the turbo-jet engine, and the determined effort to design and develop it to replace piston engines in the air, was one of the most important technical achievements of the 20th century. That one man accomplished this, working with a small but dedicated team of engineers and craftsman in the middle of a war, and in the face of many doubters, was a truly monumental achievement. The jet engine conceived by Frank Whittle, a young RAF officer who had the necessary intellect, vision, and dedication to fulfil his dream of flying higher and faster, made the world a village, and introduced world-wide travel to ordinary people everywhere. Provenance: Acquired by our vendor from John Wilson (Autographs) Ltd., Witney, Oxfordshire, on 24th June 1980. In his catalogue description Wilson notes that of the five copies which were prepared 'two, perhaps three, are believed to have been destroyed'. The document has not been offered for sale or appeared at auction at any time since, until now.

1963 BSA C15 SS80 Sports Star, 250cc. Registration number CME 107A (non transferrable). Frame number C15 38709. Engine number C SS 2968.( please note the V5C says C552968)In September 1958 BSA introduced a new ?250? that would provide the basis for an entire range of singles in capacities up to 500cc. This newcomer, the C15, featured a compact overhead-valve engine and unitary four-speed gearbox. Alternator electrics and coil ignition were features, early models being distinguished by a distributor-type points housing. The engine/gearbox unit was housed in a conventional cradle frame with bolt-on rear subframe. Trials and scrambles versions were offered as the range expanded during the 1960s.A sportier version of the C15 was introduced in 1961 called the C15 Sports Star or SS80 with the 80 representing the maximum speed of the bike in a similar way to Triumph?s normal naming convention. The SS80 used a roller big-end instead of the plain bearing on the C15 Star, a sportier camshaft, a higher compression piston, a larger inlet valve and a larger bore AMAL 376 carburettor to give more output power. It was similar looking to the C15 Star except for the use of chrome plated mudguards. It continued in this form until the 1967 season although it was renamed the C15 Sportsman in 1965.This example is quite rare amongst C15's and should make a worthy recommissioning project, it appears relatively complete but prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves.Sold with the V5C and SORN certificate.

c. 1986 Moto Morini Kanguro IXE 350 cc. Registration number not registered. Frame number E3 13 - 0440877. Engine number not found. Before the arrival of its family of 72-degree v-twin roadsters, Morini's reputation had rested mainly on its highly successful double-overhead-cam single-cylinder racers. An entirely different approach was adopted for the v-twins: each cylinder's two valves were pushrod-operated by a single camshaft while the combustion chambers were located, not in the flat-faced cylinder heads, but in the piston crowns. Coupled to a six-speed gearbox, this superb motor's performance belied its lack of capacity, endowing the lightweight, nimble-footed Morini with a top speed of around 100mph. Following the works prototypes' successes in the Paris-Dakar Rally and ISDE, Morini introduced its first off-road v-twin - the 500 Camel (or Sahara) - in 1981. A 350 version arrived the following year and soon became Morini's best-selling model in its home market. Early versions were characterised by round-tube frames and drum brakes while later ones had a square-tube chassis and disc brakes. This, later model, with a square instead of round tubular frame was used by our vendor to follow trial events. It lost its silencers and has been laid up since. It will need recommissioning and new silcencers before use. There is no paperwork with this lot.

1972 Yamaha RT3 360, 351cc. Registration number NOVA 18E156878. Frame number RT1-142771. Engine number RT1-142771.Yamaha introduced the DT/RT line of Dual Sport motorcycles in 1968. They featured rock solid power and reliability with good ground clearance and suspension. The 1973 RT3s went to a 21? front wheel in an effort to improve the handling. It was an improvement, and a change that would last for years in the Dual Sport ranks. It used a 351 cc air cooled two stroke single cylinder motor that produced 28 HP for a top speed of 80 MPH. A 5 speed transmission with an overdriven top gear allowed the top speed mark and made it road capable. At less than 230 LBS dry weight the ride was good, the handling and braking fair for the day. Yamaha?s Auto Lube system of oil injection worked very well and what a big selling point for the company. This machine was imported in July 2017 and sold to our vendor as a restoration project. When purchased it had a US Government VIN label (lost in the restoration with Florida 1974). He has undertaken the following works, stripped and rebuilt the engine, rebored with 2nd oversize NOS piston and rings, powder coated the frame and other tinware except for keeping the tank with it original patina and dealers label on the fuel cap (Yamaha South Florida), new chain, carburettor rebuilt, new seat, swinging arm bearings and other minor parts, including two new keys. It has been re-commissioned by A.E. Wildman motor cycles to get it running.Sold with the NOVA, copy of the dating certificate from VJMC and a £254 recommissioning invoice.
