He was the 1939 World and European silver medallist, and competed at the 1936 Winter Olympics, were he placed 10th. He served in the Royal Air Force in World War II. He was killed in battle against a Nazi submarine over the English Channel.

•ALFRED REGINALD THOMSON (1894-1979) A half length portrait of a gentleman, presumably a Military officer, seated before a large wall map of the English Channel, signed and dated 1930 lower right, oil on canvas, 81cm x 67cm Alfred Reginald Thomson was born in Bangalore, India, where his father was a civil servant. Born deaf, Thomson was later referred to by the press as the 'deaf and dumb artist'. During World War II Thomson became a full time salaried artist for the Air Ministry. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1945, Thomson was the last ever winner of an Olympic gold medal for painting in the 1948 London Olympics

Cambridge asked him to coach again in 1852, but a dispute broke out about the use of professional trainers, with the result that for many years both sides avoided professionals and men of working class origins. This is copy with letter from Olympischer Sport - Verlag who produced the report to the sports editor Daily Mail, reads as follows: 'In accordance with a letter to you from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) The IX Olympic Games at Innesbruck as a copy free of charge'. Dated 3/9/64. Review pre-release copies are rare. This copy has official Olympic Creditation to front of letter.
