Highlights include, Lt Col Dudley Graham Johnson VC, CB, DSO & Bar, MC of the 24th Regiment / South Wales Borderers (VC won on November 4th 1918). Plus Lionel Warren de Vere Sadlier-Jackson CB, CMG, DSO & Bar, Lt Col Raymond Collishaw RNAS, Major General Sir Harold Ruggles-Brise who was mentioned in dispatches 5 times during the Boer War, Archibald Walter Buckle RN, Commander of the Anson Battalion and recommended for a VC, Arnold Nugent Strode Strode-Jackson CBE DSO with 3 bars and also a Gold Medal Olympian (1500m) in the 1912 Olympics. Also, Captain Berwick Curtis RN CB CMG. DSO & Bar who was mentioned in dispatches at the Battle of Jutland. Robert Brooke-Popham RFC, who earned a DSO for the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. Scottish flying ace, Major William John Charles Kennedy Cochran DSO, MC & bar. Major J W Watkins MC DSO of the Lancashire Fusiliers. Lt Gen Alexander Godley, a veteran of Gallipoli and commander of the ANZAC corps. Philip Chetwode 1st Baron Chetwode, a Boer War Siege of Ladysmith veteran. Lt Gen Ivor Maxse, a veteran of the Sudan campaign, the Boer War and WW1, also commander of the XVIII corps. Claude Congreave Dobson RN, who won a VC during the Russian Civil War. Interestingly there is also the signature of the well known Zulu War veteran, and one of very few British survivors of the Battle of Isandlwana, Horace Lockwood Smith Dorrien (1858-1930). Smith-Dorrien was a transport officer at Isandlwana when the British lines were overwhelmed by the vast numbers of Zulu Impis. He managed to flee the carnage on his pony, covering over 20 mile while being pursued by 20 Zulus. The collection is made up of loose signatures, and some letters, with the total numbering approximately 183 in total. Notes: all of the signatures were obtained circa 1919 by a Boy Scout named Archibald Gibson. It’s known that Archie wrote to many of the heroes of WW1, including many VC winners, and T.E.Lawrence aka Lawrence of Arabia, who’s signatures and letter have already been sold by ourselves. Only a small selection of the signatures are shown in the images. Condition: generally good. Some age related wear / browning to some, but on the whole very good. Some of the signatures would appear to have been pasted in an album in the past, but they seem to have been cleanly removed.

Charles Murray Padday (British, 1868-1954)'Nearing the Mark' signed 'C.M. PADDAY' (lower right)oil on canvas47 x 66.4cm (18 1/2 x 26 1/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceThe private collection of Roger and Jill Hadlee (of The Royal Exchange Gallery), UK, thence by descent to the current owners.ExhibitedLondon, Royal Academy, 1910, no. 573 (titled as 'Nearing the Mark').London, The Office of A.T. Kearney, Yachts on Canvas - A Private Exhibition at the London Office of A.T. Kearney, Curated by the National Maritime Museum, 1997.LiteratureRoyal Academy Pictures and Sculpture, 1910, p. 107.James Taylor, Yachts on Canvas, London, 1998, illustrated in colour, p. 117 (titled as 'Edwardian Yachts Racing').The woman at the helm of this yachting scene is believed to be Constance Edwina Grosvenor, also known as Shelagh, Duchess of Westminster, according to Dr James Taylor (former Curator at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich) in his book Yachts on Canvas. It is easy to see why Taylor makes this connection given the resemblance and that Shelagh was a noted sailor of this period, having won a bronze medal at the 1908 Olympics held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Ryde, Isle of Wight. Shelagh was one of only two women out of 66 competitors to take part in this event, highlighting the rarity of women racing yachts at this time. Taylor also suggests that the navigator could possibly be Major Sir Philip Hunloke who became King George V's sailing master and was Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron from 1943 to 1947.In Yachts on Canvas, Taylor goes on to discuss the artist and says: 'In 1910, Charles Murray Padday (c.1870–1954) provided a unique series of illustrations explaining yacht-racing rules for the publication [The Illustrated London News], some of the preparatory designs in monochrome have survived to this day. Padday also painted and drew rare close-up deck scenes that expressed the carefree fun and excitement of small-boat yachting in Edwardian Britain before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 brought the sport in the country to a complete standstill'.Charles Murray Padday exhibited fifteen works at the Royal Academy, London and six works at the Royal Society of British Artists. The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich holds two of his pictures. His work rarely appears at auction. Roger Hadlee of the Royal Exchange Gallery purchased this picture almost fifty years ago and had such a strong attachment to the work that he kept it in his private collection where it hung pride of place at his home. As one of his daughters said 'it seems to sum up all that he loved best, and all the happy times we had on the water as a family'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
