Opperman, Rudolf W J, and Lappe Laubscher Africa`s First Olympians. The story of the Olympic movement in South Africa 1907-1987 310 x 220 The story began before there was a South African Olympic Committee. In 1904, the third modern Olympiad was held in St Louis, U S A (`. almost the last[as they were] arranged as a side-show to the World Trade Fair`). Eventually, from outside the United States, `Germany, Greece, Hungary, Canada, Australia, Cuba, Ireland, Zululand and the Transvaal participated`. The three contestants from the last two `countries` were among the 31 in the Marathon, with the best southern African finisher coming ninth. Later chapters take us through the Olympics of 1904 to 1960, which was South Africa`s last until readmission, which was after the publication of this book. The two-colour dustjacket is intact and good, though rubbed at the back. The brown Skivertex boards, gilt to the upper panel, the binding, the plain endpapers and the 70 pp of illustrated text and appendix are unmarked, undiscoloured and in better than very good condition.
