He moved to Bourne End, Buckinghamshire in 1907. At his home there, New York Lodge, an ostentatious river-side house, Kessler hosted a number of lavish parties including a fete to celebrate the success of the 1908 Olympics. For the party Kessler employed scenic artists to recreate the city of Athens with vast scenic back-drops, various set- up tents and pavilions. Some were bedecked with American and British flags A correspondent of the time reported 'Temples and Palaces rose up in a vast vista... and during the serving of dinner this scenic city was lighted by coloured fires which gave it the weirdest possible effect...The band of the 7th Hussars played merrily in the middle of it all, and Mr George Kessler must have felt as proud as Nero at the burning of Rome'Dinner was served in an 'Athenian' Palace set up by the Thames. Thousands of electric glow lamps and fairy lights lined acres of rose beds, plants, trees and hedge rows in flame. The dinner was followed by a river fete. The finale involved a re-enactment of the Olympic Games with a magnificent firework display. The Otago Star described the celebration as 'The greatest freak festivity of modern times. Next to Dorado's performance it will probably be the most memorable episode in connection with The Olympic Games of 1908'.Kessler's eventful life included travelling as a passenger on the RMS Lusitania, when it was torpedoed off Ireland by a German U-boat in 1915. He survived, subsequently giving important eye witness accounts of how events unfolded on that fateful day. As a result of his ordeal Kessler set up a relief fund for blinded soldiers and sailors with the help of Helen Keller, which still exists today as Helen Keller International.
