[CHARIOTS OF FIRE]: BURGHLEY LORD (1905-1981) English Athlete, Olympic Gold Medallist in the 400 m hurdles at the 1928 Summer Olympics. In June 1927 Burghley sprinted around the Great Court at Trinity College, Cambridge, which inspired the famous scene in the film Chariots of Fire (1981) in which Harold Abrahams achieves the same feat. A.L.S., Burghley, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 22nd August 1928, to Mr. Thompson. Burghley thanks his correspondent for their kind letter and good wishes for his married life and further remarks 'We had a very good meet last Saturday week v. U.S.A., and Douglas Lowe finished his athletic career in a blaze of glory'. VG  £100-150     Douglas Lowe (1902-1981) British Athlete, Olympic Gold Medallist in the 800 metres at both the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. The present letter is written just weeks after the 1928 Summer Olympics were held in Amsterdam and at which Burghley became a Gold Medallist.

POWELL KENNETH: (1885-1915) British Athlete and Tennis Player who competed in the 1908 & 1912 Summer Olympics as well as at the Wimbledon Championships. Killed in action at Ypres during the First World War. Rare A.L.S., Kenneth Powell, one page, 8vo, Reigate, 4th May 1913, to [Percy] Rootham. Powell informs his correspondent, in full, 'Please accept this (enclosure no longer present) from me as an expression of thanks for what you have done for the Surrey Clubs.' Annotated and initialled in pencil at the foot by Rootham, '(Enclosing a copy of the Redhill L.T.C. for 1913)'. Autographs of Powell are rare as a result of him being killed in action at the young age of 29. Some light overall age wear and minor traces of former mounting to the verso. Together with a multiple signed 8vo sheet of printed stationery from the Ranelagh Club, Barnes, by the original nine members of the University of Oxford crew who participated in the Boat Race of 1939, comprising Richard Burnell (Olympic Gold medallist in 1948), George Huse, J. L. Garton, A. G. Slemeck, R. R. Stewart, Frank Waldron, H. A. W. Forbes, R. M. A. Bourne (replaced by J. R. Bingham in the actual race owing to injury) and H. P. V. Massey. All have signed with their names alone in fountain pen inks. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an album. About VG, 2   £100-150   Percy Rootham (1872-1939) British Vice President of the Lawn Tennis Association 1923-39.

An oak drop-leaf table, basically 17th century, the oval top on baluster turned legs, 138cm wide, and a matched set of six ash ladderback single chairs, with rush seats on turned legs (7)These were formerly the property of track and field athlete Harold Abrahams (1899-1978) from the home he shared with his wife Sybil. Abrahams won the 100 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He is now, perhaps, best known from his representation in the 1981 film ‘Chariots of Fire’, which depicted his competition with Eric Liddell. These items have remained in the Abrahams family until this time.

In 16 international dual meets, Finlay only lost two hurdles races: to Lord Burghley in 1931 (vs. Italy) and to John Thornton in 1937 (vs. Germany). A wooden shield with 3 metal plates, one being the GB and Norway flags presented to the 110 metres Hurdles winner at the 1938 Meeting in London, White City plus a metal badge issued by French Athletics Association with the France and GB flags.
