A stylish continental black overlaid and cut glass decanter, stopper and six glasses incised with German insignia, the character and numbers U47 and inscribed in gothic script with commemoration of the sinking of Royal Oak in Scapa Flow on 14 October 1939, decanter 246mm high, of unknown date or manufacturer * By 14th October 1939 the British fleet had sailed leaving Royal Oak alone in Scapa Flow; a U-boat under Kapitan-Leutenant Gunther Prien on encountering Royal Oak fired off a salvo of three torpedoes all of which missed the target, a subsequent salvo proved fatal sinking the ship in minutes with the terrible loss of 833 hands.
