(The Golden Dawn) Two important works. Ithell Colquhoun. 'Sword of Wisdom,' first edition, original cloth, some small nibbles to unclipped dj designed by Juanita Grout, light marking to edge of text block, pp.307, colour frontis and twenty plates, a very good and scarce first edition, Neville Spearman, London, 1975.From the renowned artist and occultist about MacGregor Mathers and 'The Golden Dawn'. This unusual work gives special attention to its Celtic affiliations. A useful feature is the tabulated account of it's temples and their membership. A fascinating work that has played an important role in the British surrealist movement.Arthur Machen and A. E. Waite. 'The House of the Hidden Light. Manifested and Set Forth in Certain Letters Communicated from a Lodge of the Adepts,' first edition limited to 350 copies, gilt tooled original green cloth, unclipped dj, former stock of 'The Atlantis Bookshop', pp.152, vg to fine, Tartarus Press, Ferret Fantasy, 2003.This definitive translation of the text features heavily in Colquhoun's 'Sword of Wisdom'. Colquhoun argues that 'The House of Hidden Light', which she attributes solely to Waite, forms part of a ritual text relating to 'sexual magic' and is concerned specifically with 'sexual congress with preternatural beings' (p.288). This translation, published ninety nine years after written, has an explanatory introduction and annotated text by renowned Waite scholar R. A. Gilbert. It goes some way toward understanding this mysterious text.
