A fine Scottish flintlock belt pistol made entirely of steel, by Alex R. Campbell, Duni Fecit, mid-18th Century with three-stage barrel formed with a flared octagonal muzzle cut with alternating panels of neo-Celtic scrollwork, fluted breech, and engraved with a symmetrical arrangement of scrolling foliage over the length of the median, bevelled lock signed in full, engraved en suite with the barrel and the steel cut with faceted ornament ( top jaw rusted), profusely engraved stock finely decorated with characteristic patterns of interlace and scrollwork enriched with silver inlay throughout, ram's horn butt with vacant silver ovals left and right, engraved steel belt hook with pierced finial, silver button trigger and pricker each engraved and pricked as a flowerhead (the pricker an early working replacement), and original moulded steel ramrod. 30.5cm., 12in
a rare scottish heart-butt snaphaunce belt pistol made entirely of steel, dated 1645 with sighted multi-stage barrel formed with four raised mouldings and flared octagonal muzzle, engraved with the date ahead of a slotted ramp at the base of the breech and inset with a small silver rectangle towards the muzzle, bevelled lock with maker's stamp ( rubbed), the pan incorporating a disc fence engraved with an expanded flowerhead and fitted with sliding cover, the cock decorated with a matching flowerhead and the arm of the battery cut with a Celtic serpentine motif ( the sear, tumbler and mainspring all working replacements, presumably early 18th Century), with slender stock cut with simple dentil mouldings along the fore-end, strongly pronounced heart-shaped pommel, slotted small ramrod-pipe, and openwork cubic trigger and pricker en suite with the jaw screw of the cock ( the belt hook, ramrod, one side-nail and the bodkin from the pricker all missing) 40cm., 15.75in The heart-shaped pommel was a regional development of the so-called lemon pommel popularised by Scottish pistol makers within the first quarter of the 17th Century. The heart-shaped pommel appears to have originated exclusively in the centres of production in the Scottish eastern lowlands, such as Inverness, Elgin, Aberdeen and Dundee.
a very fine Scottish all-metal flintlock belt pistol by Io: Campbell (1), circa 1715 with brass barrel formed in three stages, decorated with linear panels of punched and engraved scrolling foliage on the octagonal breech, a spray of foliage ahead of the median girdle and formed with a raised moulding at the muzzle and a slotted ramp at the rear, signed bevelled border-engraved lock, the tail decorated en suite with the barrel and cock, full stock decorated with elaborate designs inlaid in silver on an engraved ground over its entire length, involving fleur-de-lys and interlace arranged between a series of slightly raised engraved bands and segmental lines, incorporating Celtic geomentric ornament and a simplified bucranium on both sides of the butt, the inlay highlighted with pricked and punched detail throughout, fitted with silver-inlaid belt hook with pierced finial (minor cracks at the joint of the finial), moulded tubular ramrod-pipe, steel pricker, silver button trigger pricked with an expanded flowerhead, and original steel ramrod 36.2cm., 14.25in
