Collection Associated with Douglas HydeA small Archive of Items associated with Douglas Hyde (1860 - 1949), distinguished Celtic scholar, co-founder and First President of the Gaelic League, and the First President of Ireland (1938-45). In 1893 he married Lucy Cometina Kurtz (1861 - 1937); they had two daughters, Nuala (who died in 1916) and Una, who married Judge James Sealy and was the mother of the scholar, teacher and critic Douglas Hyde Sealy (1929-2013).The items include:- a "Cambridge University note book" containing: (1) Pp 1 - 27: 10 songs and poems in Irish by different authors, written in a neat hand, some dated 1903; (2) Pp 31 - 60; a journal kept by Una Hyde when suffering from scarlatina, 289 December 1918 to 22 January 1919 - illustrated with many pencil sketches and very entertaining.- 3 works by Douglas Hyde - Deirdre, The Children of Lir, and The Children of Tuireann -published by Talbot Press in 1939-41.- An album presented to Una Hyde for her birthday, 19 June 1908, containing autographs of friends, with drawings (some in colour) rhymes, epigrams, etc. (1)
