Inverness - a scarce Scottish provincial silver mounted oak sugar caster by Ferguson & MacBean of Inverness, marked F&M, camel, INVs, Edinburgh 1891-92, the tapered baluster oak body profusely carved with intertwined Celtic beasts and knot work borders, with studded details, on simple silver mounted foot rim, the domed pull off cover with beaded border and pierced design 16.5cm high Notes: While there is a large amount of work known for Ferguson & MacBean (and later Fraser, Ferguson & MacBean) it is unusual to find examples of such high quality. Their work often specialised in items of historical revivalism and interest in the antiquity as can be seen with the Celtic knotwork on this piece. It is interesting to note the extremely high quality of the carving, the depth and intricate detail are far higher than often seen on the more standard mass produced quaichs. The addition of the silver studs to the knotwork borders, the use of stained hardwood and the overall outline of the piece are very reminiscent to the high quality carved dirk and sgian dubh handles. From the quality it must be assumed that the wooden body was specially commissioned from a wood carver and mounted in-house.
Ballater - a Scottish provincial Royal presentation plaid brooch by William Robb of Ballater, marked ROBB / BALLATER (in triangular punch), Edinburgh 1898 - 99, of annular form with engraved panels of Celtic knot work and four Celtic bosses, inscribed to reverse '19 ERI 04' 8.7cm diameter, 3oz Provenance: presented by King Edward VII to his ghillie / stalker on the Balmoral estate on his retirement. Notes: This plaid brooch is of the pattern worn by the Balmoral Highlanders. William Robb was commissioned on many occasions by King Edward and his mother Queen Victoria to make silver for the Royal family and also utilitarian wares for the dress uniforms of the Balmoral Highlanders. The Balmoral Highlanders were formed from the estate and household workers at Balmoral and performed ceremonial duties at the castle for state occasions and also at the local Highland gatherings etc. While the main order for uniforms from Robb was placed in 1904 earlier examples such as this do exist. The later engraved inscription to the reverse does seem to suggest that when the recipient left the estate employment he was presented with this piece. The main order placed to William Robb for Balmoral Highlanders uniform accessories in 1904 was for a complete set for twenty five men. The Highlanders had been in existence for sometime previous to this and had been in varying forms for over 30 years. This plaid brooch must be considered one of the earliest examples of the 'official' pattern for the later 1904 order. All other examples known to this author have been dated with a 1904-05 Edinburgh hallmark.

Iona - a Scottish provincial belt buckle attributed to Alexander Ritchie of Iona, marked CS*FS, Chester 1905-1906, Rg. No. 391329, the two square section buckle formed as vine leaf and branch form 14cm wide, 3.7oz Notes: While this piece is not marked for Alexander Ritchie there seems little doubt it is by his hand. The sponsors mark for assay of Saunders & Shepherd was used on Ritchie's behalf for the early part of his flourishing career before he registered his own punches at Glasgow, Chester and Birmingham. The relatively early date for this piece ties up with other known examples of this period showing both Saunders & Shepherd and Ritchie's makers marks in conjunction. Reference: See 'Iona Celtic Art - The work of Alexander and Euphemia Ritchie' by E. Mairi MacArthur, page 71 for an illustration of this design

A pair of late George III tablespoons by David Edmond, Edinburgh 1789-1790, of early Celtic point pattern with engraved initials RM in script (2) 22.5cm long, 4oz Note: The style and manufacture of these spoons is unusual and seems to be a transitional period between Old English and Celtic Point. The straight nature of the stem and quite subtle point are not standard as seen with this pattern from circa 1795 onwards when it becomes more in style and fashion
