Thrace, Kabyle AR Tetradrachm. Struck circa 218-200 BC. In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left, holding sceptre; Artemis Phosphoros, holding two torches, standing facing in inner left field, MHT below throne, BA?I?E?? to right, A?E?AN?POY to outer left. Draganov 893 (O8/R24); Price 888 (same rev. die). 15.52g, 28mm, 12h. Very Fine - Good Very Fine. Some porosity, slight flatness to rev. Toned. Extremely Rare, no examples in CoinArchives. Early in the 3rd century Celtic Gauls, pushed south under pressure from incursions into their traditional tribal lands, invaded the Balkan Peninsula. Following the collapse of the kingdom of Thrace after the death of Lysimachos, the kingdom of Tylis was established by Komontorios, whose successor Kavaros was the sole Gallic king of Thrace to strike coinage in his own name (cf. Draganov 862-873 for tetradrachms of Kabyle in the types of Alexander III of Macedon). The last of the dynasty, Kavaros was killed during a Thracian revolt against Gallic rule circa 218 BC, Tylis being razed and never recovering. This extremely rare tetradrachm dates to 218-200 BC, immediately after the death of Kavaros. The reverse die (bearing the magistral monogram MHT) marks the transition from the first to the second of the three issues understood to have been struck in this period and is paired with an obverse die used only for this issue, the engraver reducing the size of the portrait for his second the third dies.
