SHEFFIELD to centre within scale calibrated in barometric inches with the usual observations together with Admiral Fitzroy's FALLS and RISES annotations and inscribed ANEROID BAROMETER to lower margin, set behind glazed cast brass bezel incorporating recording hand to glass, the case with vase finial to the anthemion carved crest over architectural cornice and pair of collared Ionic columns flanking a glazed ceramic Fahr't and Cent'e scale alcohol thermometer, the lower section of lyre form with lappet=leaf border to dial flanked by stylised leaf carved ears over strapwork panelled base with an inverted swan-neck pendant crest.104cm (41ins) high, 32cm (12.5ins) wide. Children of the Hills, spotting and ink ownership inscription to endpapers, original cloth-backed boards, spine browned, [1913]; Wrack and other stories, browning to half-title, extremities rubbed, 1918; A Dublin Ballad, original wrappers, light creasing to extremities, Dublin, Candle Press, 1918; and 3 others by the same, 8vo & 4to (6)⁂ Latterly Master of the King's Musick and an English "gentleman" with hereditary wealth Sir Arnold Bax evinced a life-long enthusiasm for the Celtic/Irish cause. Having taught himself Gaelic he was welcomed into the Rathgar/Dublin literary world under the pseudonym of Dermot O'Byrne. Friends of W.B.Yeats, AE, Padraig Pearse et al his written works overtly promoted the myths and legends of the Celtic world against colonial suppression. "A Dublin Ballad" - Bax's emotional response to the Easter rising of 1916 - was never officially published as it was suppressed by the British censor in Dublin. This collection represents the whole of the "O'Byrne" output (bar one anonymously published volume of 1923).
