A pair of Welsh oak side chairs, probably Elizabethan, Each with a solid rectangular splat carved with a stylised standing bull holding a shield, above a solid seat, height 102cm, width 49cm.Footnote: The bull, carved on the backs of both chairs was a common symbol used in ancient Celtic times. It represents Esus, a god revered in Celtic paganism. It appeared in many myths serving as a powerful symbol representing strength, wealth, abundance, fertility, healing and protection.Provenance: The vendor informs us they belonged to her great grandmother, Harriet Williams, whose family were Welsh and lived at Castell Deudraeth, above Portmerion. Her family had lived in Gwynedd for more than four centuries. One of fourteen children. Her sister, Alice, was a Welsh Bard. Her father, and one of her brothers, were both liberal MPs. Clough Williams Ellis was a nephew who bought the property when her brother passed away. Looks to be all original, no evidence of later repairs. please see our website for more images.
