A Second World War Japanese Officer's Shin Gunto Katana, the 66.5cm blade with undulating hamon and narrow bo-hi running the length of the back edge, the unsigned tang with two mekugi ana, with two piece copper habaki, the braid bound same tsuka with triple prunus head menuki and officer's blue and brown braid and tassel, the brass tsuba with numerous sepi and sprung clip, the steel saya with leather jungle cover, 105cm, together with a related typed letter dated 8 September 1945, Camp Hoten, Mukden, Manchuria, and a photograph of the liberated US soldier holding the sword.Footnote :- The letter states it was presented to the writer of the letter by Katsutake Huikata, 1st Light Infantry, Japanese Imperial Army, who was formerly in charge of all labour performed by the 1700 Allied prisoners at Camp Hoten.

A Japanese Shinto Short Katana, the 66cm steel blade signed at the tang, with two mekugi ana, copper habaki, iron tsuba of scalloped circular form pierced with leaf shape panels and with foliate shakudo decoration, the same covered tsuka bound with green braid and with bronze menuki as a devil's head and a fruiting branch, lacks saya, 91cm, together with strips of rice paper inscribed with good luck verses which were taken from the inside the original tsuka ; a Japanese Shin Shinto Wakizashi, with 36cm chromium plated steel blade, unsigned tang, pierced iron tang and wood hilt, lacks saya, 52.5cm (3)1 - Numerous nicks to the edge of the blade which has a dull edge and dirty hardened grease patina. 2 - Numerous nicks to edge of blade. Blade and tsuba have been later chromium plated.

A Late 1944 Japanese Shin Gunto Katana, the 65cm steel blade with faux hamon, brass habaki, iron tsuba, dark green/black braid bound same tsuka with bronze leafy branch menuki, brass fuchi and kashira, the black lacquer saya with leather cover, 96cmBlack patching to the blade towards the tip. Leather press stud strap on the leather scabbard cover is broken. Unable to remove tsuka fittings to view the tang.

A WW2 JAPANESE OFFICER'S SHIN GUNTO SWORD The brass tsuba cast with floral detail and mounted beneath a similarly styled fuchi, the grip of white ray skin adorned with floral cast menuki with traditional ito wrap, the kashira of corresponding design to the fuchi, the lacquered saya with patinated tan leather outer casing; the polished blade measuring approx. 68cm in length, the whole approx. 100cm (sheathed) Provenance: Acquired by Robert Hogarth (1914-87) following his release from the Japanese Stanley Civilian Camp in Hong Kong, where he was interned from December 1941 until the end of the War. Following his release, he served as Superintendent of Mails in Hong Kong, residing permanently there until his retirement to Scotland in the 1960s.  Thence by family descent. Condition Report:Blade in a genrally tarnished condition, with patches of light surface rust. Cutting edge with a significant nick towards tip, with other lesser damage elsewhere along its length. Tsuba with some bashes/dents and sitting a little loose on the tang. Ito wrap generally worn through handling, with marks in places; beginning to fray near kashira. Minor damage to the shagreen grip surrounding the mekugi. Cast metal embellishments are well patinated and have a little play. Leather cladding of scabbard is scuffed, marked and has small tears in places. Popper-fastened strap at opening has torn off. Multiple losses to the lacquer of the inner wooden scabbard.
