The tang with a pair of securing holes and two character signature. The silvered habaki with cross cut decoration. Iron pierced tsuba, the shagreen grip with binding and menuki. Housed in red lacquered wood scabbard.

AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY JAPANESE KATANA SWORD, bronze plain Tsuba, leather covered scabbard, (tang not signed)Condition report: I have had the handle off, no signature to the tang, the handle has losses to the covering, in the revealed wood, there is a split.  Plain Tsuba with dents in rim edge, wear and scars to leather scabbard covering,  dark dent scars look like burn marks, top part of leather short to top of scabbard. Some rust to the blade, ‘dings’ and losses, some corrosion.

dating: 19th Century provenance: Japan, Nagasa of 39.5 cm, the last part of the tip is missing, hamon and hada not visible, copper habaki engraved with oblique lines and gilded. Nakago mei 'Masa Naga' with a mekugi ana. Oval koshirae with iron tsuba, engraved and carved with floral motifs with remains of gilding; shakudo fuchi-kashira, partially gilded and decorated with objects and symbols. Menuki with partially gilded figures. Brown silk Tsuka. Lacquered-wood saya (missing parts and defects), ko-katana with fine grip with gold decorations and simple, iron blade. length 58 cm.

dating: Period (1603-1867) provenance: Japan, Made of iron. Of almost-circular shape. The front side with Mei 'Ryukudo Mitsuoki' and a beautiful depiction of a painter in relief featuring silver-plated face, the vest decorated with gold flowers, his left hand, remarkably-worked in relief, 'holding' on the border of the tsuba, his right hand holding a brush. The ink and the painted roll are near the artist's feet, the roll is silver-plated and depicted with clouds. The attention of the wise man is caught by a dragon's leg and tail, both decorated in gold and peeping out from behind the clouds. The other side depicting in gold the head and the body of the dragon peeping out from behind the clouds. Of great quality. Otsuki school. Period: Early 19th century. dimensions 7,7 x 8 cm.

A Japanese iron wood grain Tsuba, 19th century, the ryohitsu plugged with shakudo, with relief cast and parcel gilt characters, signed, 7cm dia; a Japanese cast iron tsuba, 19th century, with pierced stylised decoration with lotus bud and mythical beasts heightened with gilding, 6.5cm dia

A Japanese Katana; the tightly bound shagreen handle terminating in a patinated copper end decorated in low relief with flowerheads, similarly decorated copper band below the pierced brass tsuba decorated with prunus blossom, the painted scabbard (paint worn and away in places) similarly mounted with copper bands very finely detailed in relief and the higher double band as a flowerhead mounted with a support ring, the scabbard terminating in ornate copper and brass Kabuto Gane (68.75cm blade, the full length including scabbard and handle 100cm, probably late 19th/early 20th century). Vendor advises the item originally taken by her uncle as a trophy of war, together with two black & white photographs of naval ratings at HMS Ganges, both photographs containing her uncle (exact location not known)Condition Report: Overall the piece appears to be in good condition with the metalwork having darkened down nicely commensurate with age. The item comes from a private source.  The scabbard has several areas of brown paint away (see images on website). No noticeable dents, a few scratches. The press studs function nicely, neither the scabbard nor blade shape has distorted. The Tsuba is very nice quality, the steel blade appears sharp but not excessively so. Dimensions: scabbard 74.5cm, Blade including metal band 69cm, excluding metal band 66cm

A Second World War Japanese officer's sword, with a single edged blade, cast and pierced tsuba and a bound shagreen handle, together with a similar Katana, 65.5cm blade length, and a Japanese flag with script, 70 x 97cm (3)Extract from Captain Peter Toole's account of his experience in the 1944-45 Burma campaign: 'Along the road we came across the remains of an HQ of some sort. Our infantry had passed through to consolidate the position leaving the site open for booty-seekers. I found two Jap swords and a flag, By the time I got back to the company, word had got round and the infantry, quite properly, felt the swords were their's as trophies for capturing the position. Phil Hatch adjudicated, they kept one, I the other and the flag.'Condition report: Sword tarnishing and minor rusting to blade, indentations to blade, mount missing to scabbard and minor wear and blemishes. Katana has damage to handle, rusted blade with indentations to edge, flag has staining and tears.The example with the bound handle has character marks to the tang, please see the additional images. The other example has two pins to the hilt, unfortunately, due to oxidisation these are very stiff and we have not been able to remove the hilt to access the tang. Shitogi Tachi, Japan, datiert 1867 Klinge Shinogi Tsukuri, Chu Kissaki, Torii Zori, Muji-Hada. Dünner Choji-Hamon, Midare-Komi-Boshi mit kurzem Kaeri. Kratzer, Fingerabdruckspuren und Korrosion im Bereich des Kissaki. Vergoldetes Kupferhabaki, darunter Korrosion. Nakago Ubu mit zwei Mekugi Ana, bezeichnet "Unryusai Joshitsugu, Keio San Nen Hachi Gatsu Hi" (August 1867), (YOS 1733 10 Punkte). Meijizeitliche Shitogi-Tachi-Montierung. Same belegte Tsuka mit vergoldeten Reisballen und Menukis mit drei Ginko-Mon. Beschädigte und beriebene Shitogi-Tsuba, Nashiji-Lacksaya mit vergoldeten, glatten Kupferbeschlägen mit Chrysanthemengravur. Kushi Kane Butsu und Fuchi durch nicht zugehörige Teile ergänzt. Yamagata Kanemonos auf der Vorderseite aus durchbrochen gearbeitetem, vergoldetem Kupfer mit Chrysanthemendekor, rückseitig Shakudo-Platten mit Chrysanthemengravuren und darauf kleine Aoi-Mon (eines fehlt). Länge K/M 77 cm, Gesamtlänge 112 cm. Zustand: III A Japanese shitogi tachi, dated 1867 Blade shinogi-zukuri, chu-kissaki, torii-zori, muji hada. Slender choji hamon, midare-komi boshi with short kaeri. Scratches, finger marks and corrosion in the kissaki area. Gilt copper habaki, with corrosion underneath. Nakago ubu with two mekugi-ana, labelled "Unryusai Joshitsugu, Keio San Nen Hachi Gatsu Hi" (August 1867), (YOS 1733 10 points). Shitogi tachi mounting dating from the Meiji era. Same-wrapped tsuka with gilt rice balls and menukis with three ginkgo mon. Damaged and abraded shitogi tsuba, nashiji lack-saya with gilt, smooth copper fittings engraved with chrysanthemums. Kushi kane butsu and fuchi completed with unassociated parts. Yamagata kanemonos on the front in gilt copper openwork with chrysanthemum décor, shakudo plaques engraved with chrysanthemums on the back, with small aoi mon on the top (one has been lost). Length k/m 77 cm, total length 112 cm.Condition: III

Samebelegte Tsuka mit Baumwollwicklung sowie gegossenen Menuki mit Drachendekor, Fuchi Kashira aus depatiniertem Sentoku mit Kirschblütendekor. Länge K/M 78,5 cm, Gesamtlänge 108 cm.Die Klinge stammt vermutlich aus der Zeit der Satsuma-Rebellion und war über einen längeren Zeitraum der Hitze eines Brandes ausgesetzt. A Japanese sword, Katana, 71cm sharpened blade, circular iron tsuba, pierced with two inner circles, only one mount 'fuchi' remaining, no binding, in its black lacquered saya.
