A Japanese katana for restoration, blade length approx 69cm, with relief decorated tsuba to over wrapped same grip, in possibly associated leather scabbard.Additional InformationThere is a loss to the blade lower section just above the copper wrapping with further nibbles to edge, there is corrosion and pitting and further bluntness to tip, the tsuba quite heavily pitted with some corrosion, further general wear to hilt, the wrap obscures the shark skin so cannot speak to the condition of that though possibly could be poor, also heavily worn, scuffs, scrapes, etc and, as stated, is probably associated, this item is for restoration and will need significant attention, it is sold as seen, viewing advised, request additional images if necessary. No visible trace of a wavy tempering line, there is some movement to the tsuba, some slight movement to the handle, blade appears to run straight to the naked eye and the leather scabbard likewise, although both have quite heavy wear, the blade cutting edge does have several nibbles and losses, the scabbard heavily scuffed and scraped, the pommel somewhat loose, attached with a chord, tsuba also with surface corrosion, some quite deep scratches and gouges, we are currently unable to remove the handle to photograph the tang. Cutting edge, i.e. from near blade base to point of blade curvature approx 60cm, scabbard approx 71cm.

Overall length 41cm. Auctioneers Note - Ken tanto were usually made for presentation by swordsmiths to Buddhist temples for ritual, hence the multiple Buddhist references on the blade and mounts in this example. The art of forging blades is strongly linked to Buddhism. Umetada Myoju (1560 - 1634) showed the genius of the Momoyama age. Not only was he a great tsuba maker but he was a fine swordsmith and a renowned judge of swords. The Umetada school he founded was based in Kyoto though other branches of his school were subsequently founded in other regions. no apparent damage or restoration to the koshirae. as imaged there is light discolouration to the exposed polished part of the blade tand rust to the hidden non-polished tang We are confident that this is not a Meiji period fake. However, it may have been made by a later generation of the Umetada School using his founders name, rather than his own. There are no authentification papers from NBTHK with this blade
