Single edged blade with 5 character signature. Steel hilt with gilt decorated bee and gilt inlaid signature. Some damage to scabbard finish.

A Japanese sword (o-wakizashi), blade 21 in., shinogi-zukuri with single hi, hamon is gunome midare becoming suguha towards the nakago, ubu-nakago with two character mei (kane tsune) enraved in a style suggesting a gendaito, plain silvered habaki, iron tsuba with applied silver kylin and mixed metal foliage, tsuka with gilt highlighted shakudo mountings comprising fuchi and kabutogane kashira with waves in relief, and menuki in the form of birds in flight, lacquered saya with subtle pattern of spiral bands and mounted en suite to the tsuka, kogatana with character engraved on the blade and with gilt and shakudo kozuka adorned with clams in a reed basket.

A KATANA. A Japanese Katana complete with its saya, lacking a Kurigkata and saya throat collar or Kuchigane. The Tang is unsigned with only the one Mekugi-ana evident, plain iron Fuchi and Kashira. The Tsuba of pierced iron form, with allowance for the fitting of Kozuka or Kogai originally. The Tsuka bound in black bindings, with flower designs Menuki. The blade of 25.1/2" in length, with slight loss at the tip of 1/8" approx. Plain Yaki-ba with a plain copper Habaki, the Saya fittings of plain brass. See Illustration
A KATANA. A Japanese Katana brought home from WW11, with earlier Edo period blade fitted. Almost plain iron Tsuba having very light partial decoration evident. With two piercings for the Kozuka/Kogai originally, fitted with plain Fuchi and Kashira. Black cord bindings with ornate Menuki, wooden Saya with damaged brown leather covering. The blade with an almost full-length fuller of some 27.1/4" length, the Tang having been shortened with any signature now lost. See Illustration

Hamon [tempering pattern]: suguha, some ashi, Nakago [tang]: two mekugi-ana, kurijiri, Habaki [collar]: copper,Koshirae [mounting]: the scabbard of aogai togidashi maki-e [mother-of-pearl sprinkled designs revealed by polishing] with lacquer kurikata [retaining hook], gilt menuki of dragons, a pierced iron tsuba with chrysanthemums and leaves, inlaid gilt details, signed Echizen ju Kinai saku, iron fuchi-kashira with dragonflies, 63.5 cm. (blade); 90.6 cm. long (koshirae). The maker of the tsuba is the first generation of Kinai lived in Echizen Province. He was born in Omi Province then moved to Fukui of Echizen Province. He was active in the early Edo period and the family is famous for Kinai-bori and had thrived through the Edo period.
