Soame Jenyns was Assistant Keeper of Oriental Antiquities at The British Museum from 1931-1967. He published several books including: "A Background to Chinese Painting" published 1935, "Chinese Archaic Jades in the British Museum" 1951, "Ming Pottery & Porcelain" 1953 etc.

A Japanese copper tsuba 19 th century Of rounded rectangular form and cast with Confucian boys frolicking beneath peach trees, 7cm, together with a rosewood shibayama whist marker, of typical form and lacquered with flower sprays, the ivory tabs inlaid and decorated with birds and insects, 9cm. (2)
A Shinto Japanese Katana with Special Order Shin-gunto Mounts, the 67.5cm blade with large irregular hamon, bo'hi running for 24cm from the one piece copper habaki, the tang signed ''MUSASHI TARO YASUKUNI'' and ''MA JU GO MAI DO FUKU SAKU'', with parcel gilt bronze tsuba, the yellow braid bound same hilt with triple chrysanthemum head menuki, the prunus decorated copper kashira set with silver family mon, hung with yellow and brown cord and tassels, the browned scabbard with copper mounts matching the hilt, with a later mahogany display stand; together with, oshigata and research material, a hessian label inscribed TAKIYAMA, OFFICER, a leather and red velvet belt and pistol holster richly embroidered with flowerheads and leaves in raised gold bullion thread, and a printed photograph of the surrendering office in a leather folding frame (4) Provenance:- surrendered at Bangkok, Siam on or around 11th January 1946 by a General of the 18th Japanese Army. Blade with hagire 18cm from the tip. Numerous areas of delamination. Braid on hilt is soiled, otherwise good.
A Japanese Second World War NCO/WO's Shin Gunto Katana, the 67cm single edge steel blade with a narrow fuller running along the back edge and numbered 48008, with one piece brass habaki, pierced brass tsuba, the aluminium hilt bearing traces of original brown paint and with clip fastening (spring missing), the white metal fuchi stamped with Kokura Arsenal marks, the steel scabbard bearing traces of paint and stamped at the mouth 8670, 97cm. Nicks to edge of blade at the tipWear to paint on scabbard and hilt. Tsuba a little wobbly.
A Japanese Iron Mokko Gata Tsuba, cast and applied in gold and silver with three scribes amidst rocks and bamboo, 7.3cm by 6.7cm; two Similar Maru Gata Tsubas, one decorated with a mountain hut beneath pine trees in gold, 6.4cm, the other decorated with leaves and tendrils in gilt, 7.5cm (3)
A Shinto Period Japanese Wakizashi, the 57.5cm Bezan made blade with billowing hamon, unsigned tang, two piece copper habaki, brass chrysanthemum cast tsuba, braid bound same hilt with triple chrysanthemum head menuki, with leather covered wood scabbard, 88.5cm. Some black patching and delamination marks to blade.
A Shinto Japanese Tachi, the 77.5cm blade with broad undulating hamon, the one piece brass habaki with burred finish, bronze quatrefoil tsuba, the black braid bound same hilt set with a bronze menuki worked as a deity backed by bats wings, the silver speckled black lacquer saya with twin bronze suspension loops backed by lotus flowers, 108cm. Unable to remove hilt fittings to view tang. Blade with black patching and pitting, and with delamination marks. Black binding is fragile with some loss. Some loss of surface lacquer to saya.
A Koto Japanese Wakizashi, the 39.5cm blade with almost horizontal hamon, the bo'hi running through the one piece brass habaki and along the shortened tang, with two mekugi an, the iron quatrefoil tsuba inlaid in gold with a dragon, the black braid bound same hilt with parcel gilt bronze foliate menuki, the fuchi and kashira decorated with figures, the black lacquer saya decorated with a warrior and set with a bronze kozuka with signed blade, 56cm. Small areas of delamination and black patches to blade, with tiny nicks to edge towards tip. Tang has been shortened. Crack to saya along bottom left edge. Generally good.
dating: first quarter of the 20th Century provenance: Japan, Nagasa, 65 cm, with copper hi and habaki, rust damages on the surface at the forte. Tsuba, fuchi-kashira and menuki in shakudo. Beige, silk tsuka. Iron saya with mounts decorated en suite. Complete with a rare, officer's sword-knot. length 90.5 cm.
dating: 14th Century provenance: Japan, Fine blade (nagasa 69,1 cm, sori 1 cm), with well visible hamon and hada. Nakago mumei with one mekugi-ana. Silver-color habaki. Koshirae from the mid 18th century. Fuchi-kashira in silvered metal, menuki in shakudo carved with dragons in relief, with gilded elements. Tsuba with two, engraved foils. Wooden saya, lacquered in brown to imitate the leather, adorned with gilded mon and silver-color, metal mounts. length 97,5 cm.
dating: circa 1800 provenance: Japan, Nagasa 41.5 cm, invisible hamon and hada. Copper habaki. Iron tsuba with golden and copper floral decorations. Iron fuchi-kashira (rust damages). Wooden grip covered with fabric rope, fine menuki in shakudo portraying a bow with arrows, partially gilded. Wooden, lacquered saya, with a long, iron chape, gilded border. Ko-katana mumei, with copper kozuka, decorated with a sleeping man, lying in front of a rock. Defects and parts missing. length 59.5 cm.
dating: machi Period (1392-1573) provenance: Japan, Blade with relatively long nagasa (33 cm), normal Mihaba and Kasane. One sugata quite typical of the mid / late Muromachi period. Solid Hada Itame mixed with Nagare Hada, Hamon on Hoso Suguha base, mixed with Kogunome and Komidare, with hataraki. Boshi Yakizume. Nakago is ubu with two mekugi-ana, one of which is closed. Nakago facets appear to be cleaned quite recently, probably following the closure of Mekugi-ana, but nakago Mune shows a patina compatible with an antique blade. Koshirae with fine, forged iron tsuba with Sakura motif. Fuchi and kashira in Shakudo with Sakura motif and pheasant. Menuki with horses motif. Kozuka with horses motif. Saya in brown lacquer. Kojiri and Kurigata in bone. Koshirae from Edo period, with matching tsukamaki, in great conditions. length 48,5 cm.
dating: Late 14th Century - Begin of the 15th Century provenance: Japan, Sugata shows a relatively long nagasa (341,4 cm), large Mihaba, and thin Kasane, typical of the second half of Nambokucho period. Compact Hada Koitame with brilliants Ji Nie, Hamon on Suguha base, mixed with slight Notare in Nie Deki. Very bright and constant Habuchi with Hataraki. Boshi of Tora No-o type (tiger's tail), typical of the Ko Mihara school. Tsuba in a gift shakudo. Iron Fuchi and Kashira with landscape theme, signed Fuchi. Saya in black lacquer with Kojiri and Kurigata in Shakudo with plovers and waves. Kozuka not signed. length 49,5 cm.

A RARE SIAMESE NIELLO AND SILVER-GILT MOUNTED SWORD IN THE JAPANESE TASTE, 19TH CENTURY with slightly curved blade double-edged towards the point and formed with two fullers of differing length, fitted with a habaki (blade collar) at its base, round brass sword guard formed in imitation of a Japanese tsuba and engraved with floral motifs, silver hilt decorated with gilt niello work of lai dok phuttan pattern and silver scabbard decorated en suite and formed with mounts in imitation of a Japanese kurikata and kashezuno (some scuffing, minor dents) 65.2 cm; 25 3/4 in blade Swords made in the Japanese style were popular in Siam (Thailand) during the 17th-19th centuries and often served as diplomatic gifts. A similarly decorated sword presented to President James Buchanan by King Mongkut of Siam in 1861 as part of an exchange of gifts between the two leaders is preserved in the National Archives and Records Administration, Maryland, USA, Ident. No. 5923141.
