Lot 254

Japanese 1944 pattern Shin Gunto Katana, 65cm cutting edge, the tang signed Showa Ju Hachi Ningo Gatsu, 18th year, 5th month of Showa, (May 1943), the reverse with star stamp, and signed Kurihara Naganori of Seki.90cm overall length.Condition report: The scabbard has some scuffs, marks, and stains. The Tsuba and other iron parts have some corrosion. The grip has a paint finish over the binding. The habaki shows signs of wear. The blade has some shallow small chips or faults to the cutting edge as seen in image 9, there are also some similar small dents around the curve up to the point. The blade has a good polish but there are scattered black stains and light pitting marks throughout.

Japanese Wakashi, 52.5cm cutting edge, unmarked tang, iron tsuba decorated with flowers, in laquer scabbard.92cm longCondition report: The scabbard has some splits along the join lines. There is a decorative pearl finish around the top of the scabbard which appears to have some wear or faults. Some of the spacers have a brass foil cover that is peeling in places. The blade appears in good general order with no chips and a bright polish. There are occasional fingerprint marks and some very light scratches. There does not appear to be any cracks however there is a mark towards the tip which could either be a scratch or a short crack. The line of the fault is very straight and does not appear on the reverse side of the blade. See images 23 and 24 which show the mark on the tip and the reverse side of the same location.

A good quality Japanese Officer's gendaito katana and saya second-quarter 20th century signed Ryuminsai Kanetomo at the Dragon Sleeping Studio 龍眠齋兼友入道作之, in gunto mounts, the saya finished in chocolate brown ishime lacquer with gilt bronze koiguchi, obi-tori, shibakiki and ishizuke, the 27-inch (68.5cm) blade forged in iron sand from Kujukuri beach and having a bevelled mune and silvered copper habaki, the petal-edged seppa around a cusped gilt-bronze tsuba cast with flowerheads, the fuchi with peach blossum matching the koiguchi, the ray-skin tsuka bound in dark brown over gilt bronze peach blossum menuki, capped with a shaped gilt bronze kabutogane, signed to both sides of the tang.

The nakago is suriage with machi-okuri, two mekugi-anas, the yasurime is higaki, the tip is kuri jiri, the mei (signature) reads KANEMOTO. The katana, also exhibiting an old sashikomi polish, with shinogi-zukuri and iori mune, ko-kissaki, the hamon is sanbonsugi with togari elements, the hamon in nioi-deki with sunagashi, the hada is mokume, o-itame. The nakago is suriage with machi-okuri, three mekugi-anas, the yasurime is kiri and the tip is kiri.The mountings:Each with an iron tsuba of maru gata form with one hitsu, executed in sukashibori to depict a sailing boat, a partly gilt copper fuchi with a hossu and mokugyo in relief, a partly gilt copper kashira depicting Hotei smiling in his sack, shakudo and gold menuki with seashells, a gilt habaki with distinct file marks, dew drops, and clouds. The tsukas covered in rayskin and wrapped in black textile. The sayas wrapped in a yellow silk brocade decorated with floral roundels.NAGASA 51 cm (the wakizashi) and 66.3 cm (the katana), LENGTH 75 cm (the wakizashi koshirae) and 99 cm (the katana koshirae)Condition: The blades in very good condition with minor surface wear. A SAMURAÏ SWORD, INSCRIBED WITH THE SIGNATURE SOSHU JU TSUNAHIRO JapanBlade description:- Tsukurikomi (shape): shinogi zukuri (four sides), hiro mune (with a two-side back), ubu nakago (the lame with its original length, i.e. not shortened)- Nagasa (length of the blade): 55 cm- Haba (thickness of the blade): 0.6cm- Sori (curve of the blade): 2cm- Ji hada (steel grain) de type itame-hada (resembling a wooden board).- Hamon (temper line) of hitatsura type- Boshi (resembling a wooden board): ko maru (short and round)- Meï (signature): SOSHU JU TSUNAHIRO- Period: possibly 16th centuryThis blade has a rare temper line (hamon) referred to as hitatsura. At the end of the Muromachi period, a group of black-smiths set up in Odawa, a city of the Soshu Province. This group, referred to as Odawa Soshu, is attached to the Sue-Soshu School. Youndai Soshu Masahiro was awarded the name "Tsuna" by Hojo Ujitsua, the Daimyo of Odawara. He then changed his name in "Tsunahiro".Mount description (koshirae): The blade is mounted with a black lacquered wooden scabbard (saya) set with a Kogaï and a Kozuka, both adorned en suite with Uru Ryu (rain dragons). The original grip has been rebound in blue silk. There is a split to the chagrin on one side of the grip, and a loss (approximately 7mm) to the other. The Fuchs and Tsuba with light wear. Tantô-Tsuba mit Hitsu-ana aus geschwärztem Eisen. Montiert in einer rot lackierten Saya mit Kurigata und Kaeri-tsuno. Menuki in Blütenform. Fuchi und Kashira aus Shakudô en suite mit Kranichen und Blüten verziert. Blaugrüne Griffwicklung über qualitätvoller Rochenhaut. Auf der Sashi-ura mit Längsrissen. Kozuka und Kogai wohl ergänzt, mit Fischmotiven. Gute Klinge in qualitätvoller Montierung. L ohne Saya 54 cm.

A Shin Shinto Japanese Wakizashi, with 46.5cm blade, one piece white metal habaki, unsigned tang, the bronze tsuba cast with a single deer on a wave decorated ground, the black braid bound same hilt with shakudo catfish menuki, the fuchi and kashira decorated with bamboo, the black lacquer saya decorated with flowering tree peonies in colours and gilt, 67cmCondition report: The blade is rust pitted, with numerous nicks to the edge and signs of resharpening which has disguised the hamon. The saya has a chip to the lacquer on one side and is missing the kozuka.
