A Japanese sword with pierced tsuba and metal scabbard - 95cm long CONDITION REPORTBy our judgement, condition of lot is good.Notably, fixings are loose on hilt, scabbard sports some chips, and there is a ding to blade edge.There is no visible inscription to the tang.The cutting edge is 70cm long.Our team of trusted experts are on hand to help and always endeavour to provide an accurate judgement. A FINE 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE TANTO, 25.5cm clean blade incised with a character, the fully bound tsuka with plaited highlights, matching fuchi and kashira of basket form, the menuki retained by plaits, one in the form of a sword, the other a crutch, the gilt oval tsuba decorated with foliage and flowerheads in cloisonne enamels, contained in its silver birch lacquered saya applied with a snail in mixed metals, the kozuka decorated with flowerheads and butterflies. Ç‚A LARGE JAPANESE CLOISONNÉ SWORD (TACHI), MEIJI PERIOD the elaborate multi-coloured design covering the entire saya and tsuka, illustrates green dragons, with golden details and red mouths, amongst purple clouded skies, interspersed with Aoi-mon in various colours. All metal mounts, including the ashi, kabuto-gane and tsuba are in brass, as is the mokko-gata tsuba. The overall assembled length of the koshirae is 105 cm; The slender blade is shinogi-zukuri with ko-kissaki and a shallow tori-zori. There is muji-hada and the hamon is ko-midare in nioi, with many gunome-ashi. The indistinct boshi appears to be ko-maru. The ubu nakago has two mekugi-ana, suji-jikai yasuri and ha-agari kuri-jiri. It is mumei and is probably shinshinto. Nagasa: 64.5 cm; Moto-haba: 3.0 cm; Saki-haba: 2.0 cm
Ç‚A LARGE JAPANESE CLOISONNÉ SWORD (TACHI), MEIJI PERIOD elaborately decorated with multi-coloured kiku of various designs on both saya and tsuka. On the tsuka the design includes two large dragons. All metal mounts on both saya and tsuka, as well as the mokko-gata tsuba are in brass. The blade is shinogi-zukuri with tori-zori and chu-kissaki. The notare-midare hamon is in nioi and the boshi is o-maru. The hamon ends near the machi with yakidashi. The nakago has yoko-yasuri and kata-yamagata jiri, a single mekugi-ana and is mumei, probably shin-shinto. Nagasa: 68.0 cm; Moto-haba: 2.9 cm; Saki-haba: 2.0cm

Japanese Tanto Small Sword With Signed Tang 12 3/4 inch, single edged blade. Copper habaki. Tang with character signature. Steel tsuba with chiselled and gilt decorated, floral sprays and insects. Silvered fuchi with corn and rabbit decoration. White shagreen grip panels. Contained in its black lacquered scabbard with gilt decorated bamboo and bird decoration. Scabbard containing its small, kozuka dagger. 3 3/4 inch, single edged blade. Darkened copper hilt with gilt filled, line decoration.

A good collection of 18th century and later iron sword guards, including two with signatures, each with gold decoration, one with a dragon and gold cloud design the other with plum blossoms, others examples include thistles, samurai warriors, exotic birds, dragons etc, some with gold or silver inlay, various shapes and sizes, see lot 121Qty: (22)NOTESProvenance: The family of Dr Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014), son of the birth control pioneer Marie Stopes (1880-1958), and his wife Mary, née Wallis (1927-2019), herself the daughter of the illustrious scientist, engineer and inventor Sir Barnes Neville Wallis (1887-1979). The tsuba in this lot are all believed to have been acquired by or given to Marie Stopes. As a palaeobotanist Stopes had worked in Japan from 1907 to 1909, exploring coal mines in Hokkaido for fossilised plants.

A Georgian Hunting Hanger, with 54cm double edge steel blade, the blackened steel hilt with facetted crossguard, chamfered ivory grip and elongated octagonal pommel, lacks scabbard, 70cm; a Japanese Second World War Katana, the blade rusted into the copper lacquered steel scabbard, with brass tsuba and braid bound same hilt, af (2). Hanger with delamination to the edge of the blade towards the tip. The blade is rust pitted. The hilt has wear and orange rust pitting. The ivory grip has small age cracks. Japanese WWII Officer's Katana, mounted with shin-gunto 1934-1944 (new military sword) fittings but with civilian iron tsuba of 17th century style, the kabutogane (hilt or pommel) bearing silver family mon reading 'Kanamura', the blade with unsigned tang thought to be early 17th century but in the style of Nanboku - cho period blade made in the Mino provence.
