* JOAN EARDLEY RSA (SCOTTISH 1921 - 1963) CATTERLINE SEASCAPE REVISED TITLE: SEA, CLIFFS AND LIGHTHOUSE (EE143) see notes belowoil on board, titled label versoframedimage size 58cm x 106cm, overall size 77cm x 125cm Provenance: Although sold by Cyril Gerber Gallery and others as "Catterline Seascape" The Eardley Estate has confirmed the correct title is Sea, Cliffs and Lighthouse (EE143). The Eardley Estate has also intimated that it was most likely painted between 1960-63. Eardley Estate until 1981 when sold to or via Aitken Dott (The Scottish Gallery). With Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow (label verso with "gallery title" of Catterline Seascape).Sale; Bonhams, Edinburgh, 15 April 2014, lot 15 (from the Estate of the late Professors Sir Kenneth and Lady Noreen Murray) sold with the gallery title of "Catterline Seascape". History of the painting - A previous owner purchased this painting from Bonhams in 2014. There were two small darker clouds in the central area that they found to be distracting. A professional conservator was employed to paint over these darker patches with a lighter shade. Should any purchaser wish to revert the picture to it's original state, the assumption is, that removing the small area of overpainting would be a relatively straightforward procedure for a professional conservator. Full condition report available on request and "before and after" photos will be supplied if requested. Note: Joan Eardley’s reputation as one of the twentieth century's leading artists is assured. Having trained at the Glasgow School of Art the artist caught the attention of galleries and collectors with her stunning portraits of children from the street life of Townhead district of Glasgow. Eardley's late works, painted in or around the village of Catterline in Aberdeenshire, are some of her most powerful and expressive. Catterline, a tiny row of fishermen’s cottages hunkered on the wild North East Scottish coast, became the foil to the scenes of urban decay and scrambling clusters of children playing in the streets. Here her work found an expanse of elemental scenery and wild, wind-lashed textures to tempt her brush. Again favouring almost spartan living conditions; the simplest of furniture, the light of old oil lamps, Eardley would spend weeks at a time alone here, trudging doggedly out into the elements to paint en plein air. The work produced here is often tumultuous; the artist revelling in the battle to distil the landscape’s essence even as it tries its best to evade her. Crashing waves, tangled grasses and heaving skies characterise these works which again capture the duality that is at the root of her work: her ferocious skill married with an un-replicable sensitivity to her environment.
